Vennesla Library and Cultural Centre by

Helen & Hard Architects

Chunky wooden ribs bend around the walls and ceiling of this
library in Norway byHelen & Hard Architectsandintegrate lighting,
bookshelves and seating.
The 27 ribs frame the outline of a double-height hall, which spans
the length of the Vennesla Library and Cultural Centre and includes
a mezzanine.

with a warm timber structure whose 27
curvaceous ribs bridge the ceiling,
house reading pods, hold books and form
furniture elements.
Although light travels freely through this
bright, open area, the ribs also provide
privacy. Theyrefitted with acoustically
absorbent components, which double as
air-conditioning ducts, and bent-glass
panes that cocoon visitor susing

element of natural light is the main focus of the
design, and creates elegant spaces that are
perfectly suited for the art that it houses.

OBSERVATIONS-

At the entry, a 14-foot high ribbon of red lacquered steel, as sleek and
shiny as a luxurious sports car, curves around beauty station displays,
and draws customers into a world of constantly changing visual delights.
To enhance the flow of space a backlit ceiling floats above the red wall,
designed to ensure direct white light and prevent merchandise and
people from appearing red. Accent lights create highlight, and createa
dialogued between exposed and concealed, rectangular and circular to
mimic the interior design layout.
Ending the storeis a towering vintage crystal chandelier shimmering over
a circular skin care table. The Elizabeth Arden store truly surrounds you
in a world of beauty, elegance and glamour.
