About Radiator
What is Area density?
What is Heat Exchanger?

Heat exchangers is devices that are facilitate the

exchange of heat between two fluids that are
different temperature without mixing to each
other
What is Radiator?

Radiator is the application of the heat exchanger

which is the part of the engine cooling system
Purpose of Radiator

Remove excessive heat produced by the engine

during combustion and by friction.
4000 degree temps. could seriously damage
engine parts.
Types of Cooling Systems

Air cooling system

Liquid cooling system
Air cooling system

Air Cooled engines are light and use a very simple

cooling system.
Have few if any moving parts.
Require little or no maintenance.
Cannot cool as efficiently as liquid cooling systems
Liquid cooling system
Use antifreeze (a 50/50 mix of water and ethylene glycol).
This antifreeze circulates through the engine absorbing and carrying
away some excess heat with it.
These systems are heavy and have many parts which require
maintenance.
They cool an engine far more efficiently than an air cooling system.
Get the engine up to operating temperature faster than air cooling

System components Function

Centrifugal pump Cooling fluid circulation

Cooling fluid Heat transfer

Radiator Heat exchange with the ambient

Fan Air through the radiator at low

vehicle speed

Thermostat Engine temperature stabilization

Types of flow
Parallel flow
The hot fluid and cold fluids enters the same direction.

Counter flow
The hot fluid and cold fluids enters the opposite
direction.

Cross flow
The hot fluid and cold fluids usually move to
perpendicular to each other.
About Radiators
Allows for heat to move from coolant to the outside air.
Cooler air flowing through the radiator cools the coolant.
Most radiators about 28-35 sq. feet.
Can have multiple cores to increase area.
Two types
- Cross flow
- Down flow
Down flow Radiator
Cross flow Radiator
What is Area density ?

Area density() is ratio of heat transfer surface

area of heat exchanger to its volume.
Area density of car radiator (= 1000)
