ASSURANCE OF SALVATION
What is Salvation?
Deliverance from suffering/danger.
Eternal, spiritual deliverance

Biblical salvation refers to eternal deliverance from the

consequence of sin and therefore involves the removal of sin.

eg. Paul told the Philippian jailer what he must do to be saved.

(Acts 16:30,31)
What are we saved from?

(Romans 5:9 ): 9 Much more then, being now justified by his

blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.
(1 Thessalonians 5:9) : 9 For God did not appoint us to suffer
wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.
(Romans 6:23 ):For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of
God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
What is sin?

Violating Gods commands (Gen 2:17, 3:6)

Any action, feeling or thoughts against Gods standards (Matt
5:21,22,28)
Failing to do what is right (James 4:17)
Falling short of Gods glorious standards (Rom 3:23)
Why do we need salvation?

- To be saved from the consequences of sin

Consequences:
Birth in sin (Psalm 51:5) : 5 Surely I was sinful at birth,
sinful from the time my mother conceived me.
Alienation (Genesis 3:23):23 So the LORD God banished him
from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had
been taken.
(Ephesians 4:18):18 They are darkened in their understanding and
separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in
them due to the hardening of their hearts.
Bondage (John 8:34): 34 Jesus replied, Very truly I tell you,
everyone who sins is a slave to sin.
Guilt, suffering and DEATH (Romans 5:12):12 Therefore, just
as sin entered the world through one man, and death through
sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned.
(Romans 6:23):23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God
is eternal life in[a]Christ Jesus our Lord.

Eternal Death Sentence (Matthew 25:46):46 Then they will

go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.
(Daniel 12:2)2 And many of them that sleep in the dust of the
earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and
everlasting contempt.
How do we receive salvation?
We are saved by faith.

First, we must hear the gospelthe good news of Jesus death and resurrection
(Ephesians 1:13) 13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of
truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a
seal, the promised Holy Spirit,.

Then, we must believefully trust the Lord Jesus

(Romans 1:16) 16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that
brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile..

This involves repentance, a changing of mind about sin and Christ.(Acts 3:19) And calling
on the name of the Lord
(Romans 10:9-10, 13) 9 If you declare with your mouth, Jesus is Lord, and believe in your
heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that
you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are
saved. 13 for, Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved..
Why do we doubt about our salvation?

We dont remember specific point when we received Christ.

Due to questions in our faith
Struggle with certain sins
Doctrinal misunderstanding
Misconception (through our deeds)
How can you have assurance of
salvation?
(1 John 5:1113) And this is the testimony: God has given us
eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He who has the Son has life;
he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write
these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so
that you may know that you have eternal life.
(John 1:12) 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who
believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of
God.
It is to those who have believed in Him
If you have Jesus, you have life. Not temporary life, but eternal.
Not based on feelings

I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him
who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned, he
has crossed over from death to life (John 5:24).

Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever

rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on
him (John 3:36).
Not because of works

The Bible says that we can do nothing to earn our salvation.

God, because of His grace, did all that needs to be done. He
saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but
because of his mercy (Titus 3:5a).

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faithand

this not from yourselves, it is the gift of Godnot by works,
so that no one can boast (Ephesians 2:8-9).
Have you repented? (Acts 3:19)

Do you believe that Jesus died to pay the penalty for your sins and
rose again from the dead (Romans 5:8; 2 Corinthians 5:21)?

Do you trust Him alone for salvation? (John 14:6, Acts

4:12)

If your answer to these questions is yes, you are saved!

Assurance means freedom from doubt. By taking Gods

Word to heart, you can have no doubt about the reality
of your eternal salvation.
THE GOOD SHEPHERD
Who is your Shepherd?
Shepherd: one who loves, guides, takes care, etc
Sheep: one who needs tender care, guidance, vulnerable,
depends on shepherd for everything.
Characteristics of true shepherd:
Loves his sheep, develop intimate relationship
Understands the needs of the sheep
Leads them through fresh pastures and still water
Guides them through valley of shadow of death
Searches out for sheep when they go astray
Disciplines and corrects them with rod and staff
God speaks through:
Word of God
Prophecy (early prophets prophesied Jesus would come)
Dreams/visions (God spoke to Jacob)
Holy spirit (john 14:26)
Through tough times
How to listen to the voice of God

Should have intimate relationship (john 10:27)

Quiet time
Be a purposeful listener (follower) not a passive listener (fan)
Give priority to him (Matt 6:33)
Following shepherd
Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will
hear a voice behind you, saying, This is the way; walk in it.
- Isaiah 30:21
My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow
me. John 10:27
The voice of the lord is powerful; the voice of the lord is
majestic. Psalm 29:4
Abundant life: The thief comes only to steal and kill and
destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to
the full. John 10:10
BIBLE STUDY
Uniqueness of the Bible:
The bible reflects Gods qualities. It is holy, infallible, everlasting
(1 Pet 1:23-25), and trustworthy. It has originality, authority and
unity. It is inspired, that is, God-breathed (2 Tim 3:16, 2 Pet
1:20,21). It honestly portrays the shortcomings in the lives of
great heroes of faith like Abraham, Moses, and David
The need to study:
God invites us to know him.

God himself has commanded us to study his word. (josh 1:8)

It is the only way to gain knowledge of salvation, and to grow in faith.

(1Pet 2:2)

Scripture is the ultimate authority in all matters concerning belief and

practice. (2Pet 1:20,21)

It is the chief means which God employs to bring his people to

maturity (2 Tim 3:16,17)

Amidst false teachings that are rampant, it is imperative to study the

scripture carefully so as not to be swayed by every wind of doctrine.
(Eph 4:14)
Types of text
Narrative
The focus is on a particular event
E.g. Stories from the Old Testament, first five books of the New
Testament
Poetry
Artistic expression of feelings and/or insights
E.g. Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Song of Solomon, parts of prophecy
Teaching
The focus is on a particular idea
E.g. Messages of Jesus, Pauls letters, NT letters, OT prophets
Inductive method
observation
Seven fact finding questions: who, where, when, what,
how, why, so.
Type of text

Time words: after, before, evening, next day, etc
Comparisons and contrasts
Linking words: for, therefore, because, but, so.
Figures of speech: (Matt 5:13,14)

Interpretation
Interpretation is showing or explaining the meaning of facts
observed.
The need for interpretation:
There is spiritual encouragement for correct
interpretation Eg. Neh 8:8; Luk 24:27, 2Tim 2:15
Correct interpretation is the antidote to
i) heresy or false teaching. 2 Pet 2:1-3
ii) fanciful and subjective interpretation and
tampering with Gods word. 2Pet 3:16, 2Cor 4:2
Application
The word of God is authoritative and not optional
Application is personally responding to the truth learned.
Response to Gods word involves transformation of lives and
society.
To do the truth is to translate the message into action. So the
response must be expressed in different ways:
Getting to know God and enjoy him more
By obeying Gods commands
By claiming his promises
By learning from examples of good and bad
By believing Gods statement of truth
By acting on the direct teachings
PERSONAL EVANGELISM

Romans 10: 14-17.

Meaning:
Evangelism is the announcement, proclamation, and/or
preaching of the gospel (1 Corinthians 15:1-4), the good
news of and about Jesus Christ. Therefore, the gospel is a
communicated messagecommunicated in verbal (Luke
7:22; Romans 10:14-17) and/or written (Luke 1:1-4) form.
Why personal?
For this is what the Lord has commanded us:
I have made you a light for the Gentiles,
that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.Acts
13:47 | NIV |
He said to them, Go into all the world and preach the gospel
to all creation.Mark 16:15 | NIV |
However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only
aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus
has given methe task of testifying to the good news of
Gods grace. Acts 20:24 | NIV |
Why should we share gospel?
1) Love others as GOD the Father loved you (john 13:34)
2) Love your neighbour as yourself (Matt 22:39)
3) Great commission (Matt 28:20)
4) Imitating Jesus (Matt 11:29)
How to do?
Through you character, actions, and behaviour
- Lovable Attitude
Pray for your neighbour
Action Go and deliver
1 Pet 5:2 2 Be shepherds of Gods flock that is under your
care, watching over themnot because you must, but
because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not
pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve;
