Gender Inequality within the

American Society.
By: Austin Jaeger ENGL1050- Summer
"A gender-equal society
would be one where the word
'gender' does not exist: where
everyone can be
themselves. Gloria Steinem

Gender Equality is something that we

as Americans are still trying to fight for
to this day. Society seems to be split in
two on what is right and what is wrong
when talking about peoples
differences. Whether this be fighting for
equal pay for women in the work
place or equal treatment of a spouse
in a same-sex marriage, gender
equality is a hot button issue in
America today. We as people need to
come together and fight for equal
rights for everyone and continue to
move forward as a society rather than
reverting to the ways of Americas
embarrassing beginnings as a country.
Last year's landmark Supreme Court decision guaranteeing
marriage equality in all 50 States was a historic victory for LGBT
Americans, ensuring dignity for same-sex couples and greater
equality across State lines. For every partnership that was not
previously recognized under the law and for every American who
was denied their basic civil rights, this monumental ruling
instilled newfound hope, affirming the belief that we are all more
free when we are treated as equals.

But I found out that if something happened to me, my
wife wouldn't be recognized as such by the country I
fought to defend. While I was alive, & even in death, the
Defense of Marriage Act would deny her the VA benefits
any heterosexual spouse of a veteran receives. My wife
couldn't be buried with me at any Veterans Cemetery,
even here in California, because they took federal
monies to help with the Cemetery. They had to follow
federal law.

I did not choose to announce to the news media that I
am transgender. My school board made that decision for
me. But now that I am visible, I want to use my position to
help the country see transgender people like me as real
people just living our lives. We are not perverse. We are
not broken. We are not sick. We are not freaks. We
cannot change who we are. Our gender identities are as
innate as anyone elses.

Join me in affirming the vitality of our LGBTQ
communities. Join me, with raised voices, in proclaiming
that the exploitation of womens bodies is not who we are.
Join me in decrying hate speech, slurs and epithets
whenever and wherever they are uttered. Join me in
reminding the world that the promise engraved at the foot
of The Statue of Liberty: Bring me your tired, your poor,
your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, are still
the words we choose to live and, if necessary, die by.

Will You Join Me?

The flip side of marriage equality is that people
who strongly oppose it find the shifting culture
extremely disturbing, said Gregory M. Herek, a
psychology professor at the University of California,
Davis, who is an expert on anti-gay violence.
They may feel that the way they see the world is
threatened, which motivates them to strike out in
some way, and for some people, that way could
be in violent attacks,
