Graduate School

Monday thru Friday Saturdays
6:30am to 8:00pm 6:30am to 7:00pm

Material Classification
• The Library uses the Library of Congress Classification
Scheme for the classification and organization of its
collection such as books, CD’s, DVD’s etc.

• Each book has what we call a Call Number which is


composed of one or two letters followed by numbers.

• The Library has a very extensive
collection of books and multimedia
materials that are searchable through
the Online Public Access Catalog or
OPAC.
• The OPAC is located at the right side of
the library entrance.

• This section of the library is where


dictionaries, atlases, almanacs,
encyclopedias, handbooks, manuals
and other reference materials are
found.

What are reference tools?

•Reference tools are materials that can be


used by itself as a source of information
without the further use of a secondary
source.

•These materials are available at the


Reference Section of the library.

Dictionary

• Is a list of words in book format,


arranged alphabetically with its
definition, spelling, and syllabication
etc.

TYPES OF DICTIONARIES:
1. FOREIGN LANGUAGE DICTIONARIES
- tackles (2)two languages, one in English with
foreign definitions and the other in the foreign
language with English meanings.

2. ENGLISH LANGUAGE

3. SUBJECT DICTIONARIES - focuses on specific subject.

4. SUPPLEMENTARY ENGLISH LANGUAGE MATERIALS


– deals with special phases of the English
language use such as grammar, synonyms, antonyms,
rhyme and foreign terms.

Handbooks
• A handbook is a type of reference tool or a
material of instruction that is intended to
provide ready reference.

• Handbooks may deal with any topic, and are


generally compendiums of information in a
particular field or about a particular
technique. They are designed to be easily
consulted and provide quick answers in a
certain area.

• A comprehensive reference work
containing articles on a wide range of
subjects or on numerous aspects of a
particular field, usually arranged

GAZETTEERS
•A gazetteer is a
geographical dictionary or
directory, an important
reference for information
about places and place
names.
•may also provide
historical and statistical
information about places
and its geographical

• Presents information of
general interest to the
traveler.
• Lists places to stay, places to
visit, historical background
of the country, etc.

ATLAS
•is a reference tool containing
a collection of maps.

Indexes
- a regularly updated print periodical publication that
lists articles, books, and/or other information items,
usually within a particular discipline and is arranged
by subject and/or by author.

Biographical Sources
-are compilations of
biographies of famous
persons. Most of the time,
these biographies are
compiled under
categories.

• This section is also responsible for the compilation
of various clippings by subject of articles with
educational and informational value found in
newspapers and are stored in the Vertical File
situated outside, just in front of the library’s exit.

• Bound periodicals are also available in this


section which are bound issues of periodicals
under the same title and year of publication.

E-Lib

• The E-Library provides access to the


internet, CD-ROMs, E-mail, social
networking sites and online
databases and other online
resources as supplement to the
information and services available
at the library.

Terms of Access at the E-Lib:
• The user must have a registered or validated library user
account.
• Present you ID and Enrolment Assessment Form (EAF)
upon entering.
• Searching, downloading and the use of Social Networking
sites such as Facebook, Twitter, etc. are allowed.
• Food and bags are not allowed inside the E-Lib.
• Browsing of games and malicious sites are strictly
prohibited.
• Each user has 5 free hours of E-Lib access, after it is
consumed, users can reload their account with a fee of
P10.00/hour payable at the CASHIER’S OFFICE.

Request for REFERRAL LETTER –


Referral Letters are issued to students and
faculty who would like to use other library’s
collection and resources. In reciprocal, the LPU
ARC accommodates visiting researchers (students
and employed individuals) to use the library’s
resources for free.

LOAN POLICIES
The borrower must first have a registered or validated
library user account to be able to borrow library materials.

- 5 books at one time for 5 days, renewable twice.
- Overdue fine of P10.00 per book per day.

II. RESERVE
- For overnight use only
- Overdue fine of P10.00 per hour.

III. MEDIA AND AUDIOVISUAL MATERIALS


- May be borrowed for (5) days, also renewable twice.
- Overdue fine of P10.00 per day per title. 58

LIBRARY DO’S AND DON’T’S

CELLPHONES must be put on SILENT or in VIBRATE


mode. Please go outside to make or receive calls.

NO EATING or DRINKING please! Proceed to the canteen


or eat your food at the corridor.

Be considerate of others – The library is a QUIET STUDY


AREA. Please keep your voices at a minimum to avoid
bothering other users.

Keep music on earphones at a level so others can’t hear you.

DO’S AND DON’T’S

TIDY UP your table before you leave and properly dispose


your trashes in trash cans found inside the library.

DO NOT TEAR, WRITE ON, or otherwise damage any


library material and/or equipment.

DON’T LEAVE BOOKS scattered on your table, just stack


them up in order and we will do the re-shelving.
