Scenario
You are one of the staff in a 300 bedded Hospital
with minor specialist services. The Hospital buildings
consist of one specialist clinics block with centralised
air-conditioned, one laboratory, one radiology, one
ED and one rehabilitation block respectively with
several split air-conditioned. Discuss what is Hospital
Operational Budget. Recently it was noted that the
Hospital is in short of operational budget. You
noticed that the utility bills and staff mileages claims
is on the rise. What are steps can be taken to save
some money in Hospital Operational budget.
How to reduce cost of hospital operational
budgets?
- Reduce the budget routine activities such;

1. Mileage claim

Is one way to get tax relief on bussiness / working


journey in your own vehicle
Use hospital transport to prevent misused of
mileage claim
Promote concept car pooling in working to reduce
cost
Prevent unnecessary outstation by using own
hospital facilities
2. Staff salary
Coordinating the availability and deployment
of staff according to numbers of patients
Terminate staff that are non competent for
example using contract system
Agreeing staff structures and grade and skill
mix*
3. Allowance
Reduce unnecessary allowance by not giving
every year to everyone but giving it to those
who need it

photocopy thing rather than buy it

meetings or festival or events
Use the facilities from the hospital itself such
seminar room or auditorium rather than go or
do at hotel or outside

Fundraising events
Use every expertise in every department to
organise programmes (talks/events) that
require participants to pay.
Organise regular charity sales to increase
income for each department activities.
Medications
Stop prescribing unnecessary medications
unless patient need it.
Increase awareness for patients to return back
unused medications through campaign.
Patients with higher income required to buy
their own medications.
Give short term free medications where they
need to buy own their afterwards.
Conclusion
Hospital operational budgets is an evitable needs for each
hospital
Thus, to reduce the budgets is the only way to overcome the
problem
Measures such as staff salary, allowance, mileages claims,
utilities, stationary, rental, medications, and fund raising
events are steps that could be implemented
Therefore, cooperation from every level of organisations are
needed to achieve reduction in hospital operation budgets
Besides, reducing operational budgets, we can also considers
to reduce pharmaceutical budgets, developmental budgets,
training budgets, and equipments budgets
On top of that, staff members can proactively involve in
fundraising activities and charity sales to increase budgets
