Linking Verbs

Linking verbs connect nouns or pronouns (people, places, things, and


ideas) to words that describe, label, or identify them.Without linking
verbs, there would be lots of baby talk going on. (I hungry! She scary!
Carrots yucky!)
Most linking verbs are a form of the verb
be.
Examples:
is, are, was, were, am, will be, can be, have been, has been
SHE WAS NICE
COOKIES ARE DELICIOUS
I AM THIRSTY
MRS JACOBO IS A TEACHER
Special introductory verbs

verb + to + infinitive He agreed to come with me.


Agree Yes, Ill come with you. He demanded to be told everything.
Demand Tell me everything.
Offer Would you like me to carry it? He offered to carry it.
Promise Ill study more. He promised to study more.
Refuse No, I wont come with you. He refused to come with me.
Threaten Behave yourself or Ill punish you He threatened to punish me if I didnt behave
myself.
Claim I heard her say that. He claimed to have heard her say that.

here are several reporting verbs we can use:


The most commonly used one is to say.
She said she was studying.
When the person who we are talking to is referred, we can use to tell.
You told me you liked your new dress.
We may report something that was said without keeping to the original
words, the reporting verb itself may contain that idea or intention. The verbs
here can be: to admit, to advise, to agree, to remind, to suggest, to
encourage, to insist, to persuade, to warn, to refuse, to urge, among others.

We usually use the active voice in writing and
speaking. E.g.
