Overview
A part of Lab Safety is KNOWING which
type of equipment is to be used at
specific times or specific lab procedures.
Pencils ready.
Beaker
Used to hold solids or liquids that do not
release gases when reacted or are
unlikely to splatter if stirred or heated.
Not used for measuring.
Beaker Tongs
Used to move beakers containing hot
liquids.
Erlenmeyer Flask
Holds solids or liquids that may release
gases during a reaction or that are likely
to splatter if stirred or heated.
Graduated Cylinder
A graduated cylinder is used for
measuring the volume of both liquids
and irregular objects.
Wash Bottle
A wash bottle has a spout that delivers a
wash solution to a specific area. Distilled
water is the only liquid that should be
used in a wash bottle.
Meter Stick
Theinternational standard unit of length,
approximately equivalent to 39.37
inches.
Thermometer
Aninstrument for measuring
temperature, often a sealed glass tube
that contains a column of liquid, as
mercury, that expands and contracts
with temperature changes.
Scalpel
Small,light, usually straight knife used
in surgical and anatomical operations
and dissections.
Bunsen Burner
Small laboratory burner consisting of a
vertical metal tube connected to a gas
source and producing a very hot flame
from a mixture of gas and air let in
through adjustable holes at the base.
Hot Plate
Anelectrically heated plate used to
warm or heat substances within a
laboratory.
Microscope
Anoptical instrument that uses a lens or
a combination of lenses to produce
magnified images of small objects,
especially of objects too small to be
seen by the unaided eye.
Triple Beam
Balance
A common instrument for measuring
mass named for the three beams which
carry weights.
A- beam reads only in 100 g increments;
B- beam reads only in 10 g increments;
C- beam reads in 1g increments.

Studyingscience can be a lot of fun, but it
can also be dangerous unless some
common lab safety procedures are followed.
