Storage and Handling of Containers

Always use appropriate protective clothing


such as gloves, steel-toed shoes and eye
protection.
Always use proper equipment designed for
the task when handling heavy drums

Hazardous material stored in drums shall be


dispensed from these drums using appropriate
equipment - i.e. the products shall not be
dispensed by tipping the drums. Use an electric
fuel pump when dispensing from a drum. When
an electric fuel pump is not available or not
practical, use a manual pump. Always store and
secure the hose above the drum to prevent
siphoning.

Storage Area Requirements

While storing liquid hazardous material, provide for a


spill containment volume able to contain precipitation
and the void volume is greater by 10% of the
aggregate volume of all containers or 110% of the
capacity of the largest container within its boundary
or whichever is greater.
The containment facility or the storage shed shall be
covered and away from natural elements.

In the event of spills or leaks, accumulated


rainwater and spills shall be collected and placed
into drums. These liquids shall be handled as a
hazardous waste unless testing determines them to
be non-hazardous. All collected liquids or non-
hazardous liquids shall be sent to an approved
disposal site.

Keep ample supply of appropriate spill


clean up material near storage areas.
Ensure adequate level of ventilation in the
storage areas by either the presence of a
sufficient size and number of permanent
openings or mechanical ventilation.
No child under the age of eighteen years
and no person who is in a state of
intoxication shall be employed on the
loading, unloading or transport of petroleum
or in any licensed premises.
Display Material Safety Data Sheets
(MSDS) at storage areas.

Authorized Access and Signage Requirements

Use adequate locks and control the issue of keys.


Provide fencing where appropriate. The protected
area surrounding every storage shed shall be
surrounded by a wall or fence of at least 1.8 meters
in height.
Display signage for Non-Smoking Area and
Danger at the storage areas where flammable
materials are stored.
Every petroleum storage area shall have prominently
marked thereon the number of the license held for it.

Display an extract of the conditions of the Petroleum license in


a conspicuous place in every licensed diesel storage area.
All operations within a diesel storage shed shall be conducted
under supervision of an experienced responsible agent or
supervisor who is conversant with the terms and conditions of
the license held for storage shed and those persons should
have proper safety training.

Stop the source of the spill and simultaneously contact


relevant personnel as appropriate.

Shut off any ignition sources.

Wear appropriate personnel protective equipment.

Use spill containment equipment (e.g. spill


management kit, plywood, sand bags, drain plugs
and tape) to prevent spill from running into storm
and sewer drains or into soil.
Use spill absorbing equipment to absorb the spill on
the surface as much as possible.

Stand by to help with spill assessment and


cleanup.
Arrange for further clean up, packing and
disposal of all the wastes generated by the spill
