What is Architecture?
Architecture is the art or practice of planning, designing, and constructing
buildings. Architecture can be cultural, historical, and modern civilization. It is very
important. Architecture can be artistic, but without being able to design a
functional structure, it can be useless. Architects have to know how to balance
this out when creating designs.
What does an architect do?
Architects do a lot. They conceive, plan, and develop designs for the construction
and renovation of commercial, institutional, and residential buildings. They work
for architectural firms, private corporations, governments or they may be self
employed.

Some duties of an architect may include:

Consulting with clients to determine type, style and purpose of renovations or


new building construction.

Conceiving and designing buildings and develop plans describing design


specifications , buildings materials, costs and construction schedules.

Preparing sketches and models for clients.

Monitoring activities on construction sites to ensure compliance with


Work Environment
Work for an architect is usually performed in a structured environment, such as an
office, but some time may be spent on construction sites.

Job Requirments
The education, training or qualification needed to be an architect in BC is:

A bachelor's degree from an accredited school of architecture.

A masters degree in architecture may be required.

Completion of a three year internship under the supervision of a registered


architect is required.

Registration with the provincial association of architects in the province of


work is required.

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification is offered


by the Green Building Council and may be required by some employers.
Education available in BC
There are a lot of institutions, colleges, and universities in BC that provide
programs for architecture. British Columbias Institute of Technology (BCIT)
provides the most programs in the field with 4 programs. This institute can cost
around C$13,000-C$19,000 per year.

Why I chose this career path?
I am very interested in architecture. I enjoy art and designing, and I dont consider
myself bad when it comes to math skills . Architecture can have lots of cultural
and/or historical value. This interests me a lot and I would love to learn more
about this field of work.
