What is Excel?
Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet program
that is used for:

Organizing data

Completing calculations (using formula and/or functions)


Graphing data
Example of a Excel Window

Workbook
This is an excel file that stores information. By default, workbooks contain three
worksheets (Sheet1 Sheet3). A workbook can have up to 255 sheets.
Worksheet
The worksheet is organized into a rectangular grid containing columns (vertical) and
rows (horizontal). There are sheet tabs at the bottom of the workbook window that
separate each sheet. Each tab can be renamed.
Cell
A cell is the intersection of a row and a column. A cell can contain a label, a numeric
value, or a formula. It is the basic unit of a worksheet.
Active Cell
An active cell is identified by a dark border around the cell. The column and row
headings also light up.
Formula Bar
The formula bar is located next to the Name box. It provides a space for typing or
editing cell data. Data is displayed in it as you type.
Title Bar
The title bar is the first bar from the top of the screen that displays the control icon and
three buttons in the right-hand corner.
Sheet tabs
A book usually starts with three sheets. This allows the user to save related data in one
file under grouped headings. The sheets can be added and removed to suit to user.

Menu Bar
The menu bar displays menu options which, when clicked, displays drop-down
listings of associated actions. It is identified by the options File, Edit, View, etc.
Rows
Rows are the horizontal lines on the worksheet identified by numbers. A
worksheet has 65,536 rows.
Range
A range identifies a rectangular block of cells on a worksheet.

Record
A collection of related data in a row.
Understanding Formulas and
Functions
Formula-this is an expression that is used using
cell address to express a problem. E.g.;
=A2+B2

Function these are pre written formulas built


in the system used to solve a problem. This is
a built in function. E.g.; = Sum(A1: A6)
