8.1 Tag Categories and Values

2016 IBM Corporation

Recommended Initial Configuration Procedure
Step 1 Defining VM backup schedules and setting data movers
Protect admin: define VM backup schedule(s) that are compatible with tagging via the IBM Spectrum Protect Operations Center v8.1 or
higher (recommended but not required).
Protect admin: for each datacenter, determine the number of data movers required and choose one as the default.
Protect admin: install/configure data movers and associate at least one data mover with schedule defined.

Step 2 Creating IBM Spectrum Protect tags in the VMware inventory using one of the following:
VMware admin: From the vSphere Web Client GUI, selecting an inventory object and changing its backup policy automatically creates and
applies the appropriate data protection tags to the object.
VMware Admin or Protect Admin: If customer does not want to use vSphere Web Client GUI to set tags, tags can be created by scripts.
Run the 'dsmc set vmtags' to create tags, and then run custom scripts to set IBM Spectrum Protect categories and tags.

Step 3 Protect admin: install and configure the list of data movers by
Setting VMTAGDATAMOVER YES in the options files of all data movers.
Setting VMDEFAULTTAGDATAMOVER <default_dm_nodename> in the options file of the default data mover.

Step 4 Associate data movers with schedules:

VMware admin: From the Edit Schedule dialogue in the Web Client GUI.
Protect admin: define association

Step 5 VMware admin: for each datacenter, choose the container object(s) to physically set tags for each configuration
category. Right click the container identified in step 2 and bring up the Manage Data Protection panel. Edit properties in all
categories and click OK. Result: Child objects of the container inherit the tag from the container unless the child object has a local
tag from the same category.

2016 IBM Corporation

Domain.vmfull option
The domain.vmfull option(s) defines the initial backup set and then further filtering is applied using the "Application
Protection" tag(s). For example, each virtual machine found with Excluded tag will be removed from the backup
set.
Four new domain level parameters introduced: VMRESOURCEPOOL, VMHOSTFOLDER, VMDATACENTER, and
SCHEDULE-TAG
If SCHEDULE-TAG is set, the "Schedule (IBM Spectrum Protect)" tag will be used to define/build the initial backup
set. The data mover will search in vSphere inventory for all VMs that have an inherited tag for the schedule name
being run.
Domain.vmfull setting in the VM backup schedule overrides the setting in the data movers options file.

2016 IBM Corporation

Data Mover Configuration
Use VMTAGDEFAULTDATAMOVER
<default_datamover_node> option to
specify the default data mover.
Place this option in options file of the
default data mover and optionally in all
data movers.
Default data mover backs up new VMs in
a datacenter without a data mover tag.
If default data move is not configured
then new VMs added to vCenter after the
schedule is assigned will not be backed
up and will show 'At Risk' on the IBM
Spectrum Protect Monitor table.

Load Balancing Across Multiple Data Movers
Sort the list VMs by storage usage (largest VM first)
Round-robin load balancing: Going down the sorted list, the round-
robin load balancer assigns a VM to each selected data mover in
turn.
If Full rebalance is unchecked, we only balance VMs without a valid
data mover tag. Otherwise, the load balancer overrides any existing
data mover tags set in VMs

Tagging Inheritance

2016 IBM Corporation

Tagging Inheritance Recommendations

Create a general policy configuration overall for an organization by setting

backup policies (or tags) on the highest container in the vSphere inventory
hierarchy. The policies are inherited by child containers and their virtual
machines. Then, create exceptions by changing the policy on a child
container or individual virtual machines to override the inherited policy
setting.

For ease of maintenance, performance, and usability, avoid assigning tags

to too many inventory objects.

Avoid overlapping the schedules for a data mover. Otherwise, some

schedules will be skipped.

Tagging in the vSphere Web Client

2016 IBM Corporation

Tagging in the vSphere Web Client

General policy configuration is set

locally at a high level object(e.g., a
datacenter named Cluster1)

A lower level object (e.g.,

ResourcePool2) inherits settings from
Cluster1

Edit and set local policy configurations to

override the inherited global settings.
Click Okay to save or Clear Local Settings
to revert to inherited global settings.

Local settings always override

the inherited global ones

Windows Snapshot R/W Mount enhancements
Prior versions of Snapshot for Windows allowed
VSS snapshots to be mounted as Read Only.
Prevented any operation which required writing to the
mounted snapshot

VSS Snapshots can now have 3 different mount

options
RO The current implementation allowed a user to
mount a local VSS backup RO to a selected mount
point.
RW (Persistent) The feature allows a user to mount
COPY type local VSS backups RW. Any changes
made are persistent and the backup is modified.
RW (Non-Persistent) The feature allows a user to
mount any VSS backup type RW if a VSS hardware
provider that supports the feature is used. Currently
the SVC VSS Hardware provider v4.12 or later
supports this feature.

Windows Snapshot R/W Mount Benefits
SQL Server
Attach SQL Server databases for granular restore
or access as a clone for reporting or DevOps

Exchange
Much faster item-level recovery of Exchange mail
items by eliminating the copy of the Exchange
database file into the Recovery Database during
Individual Mailbox Restore

NOTE: Non-SVC VSS providers only support

mounting COPY snapshots as RW. After the
backup is mounted as writable, the backup data
can be modified. To prevent accidental use of
this modified backup for database restore, this
COPY backup is marked as modified and
cannot be used for future database full restore
operations.
