Definition of Multimedia

Any combination of text, animated graphics, video, and

sound delivered to you by computer or other electronic
means.

A collection of various media that comes together to form a

single unit. (MULTI-media)

Multi- means variousMedia refers- any hardware or

used for communicating. Example- hardware- radio,
television, computer and mobile phone. Software- email,
Yahoo Messenger, Multimedia Message Service (MMS)
and video conferencing.
Multimedia

Information that can be represented through a variety of

media.
Multimedia presentation can be live or recorded. A
recorded presentation may allow interactivity via a
navigation system.
An integration of text, graphics, audio, video & animation in
digital environment.
The seamless integration of data, text, image of all kinds
and sounds within a single digital environment
The use of computer to present and combine text,
graphics, audio & video with links and tools that let user
navigate, interact, create & communicate
History of Multimedia

Use of Multimedia begin with begin with newspaper, the

first mass communication medium, using text, graphics and
images.
Television the new medium for the twentieth century. It
established video as a commonly available medium.
1945- as part of MITs postwar deliberations on what to do
with all those scientist employed on the war effort.
Vannevar Bush (1890-1974) wrote a landmark article
describing what amounts to a hypermedia system, called
Memex . Memex meant to be universally useful and
personalized memory device that even included the
concept of associative links-it really is the forerunner of the
World Wide Web.
History of Multimedia

1960s- ted Nelson started the Xanadu project and coined

the term hypertext. Xanadu was the first attempt at a
hypertext system-Nelson called it a magic place of literary
memory
1967- Nicholas Negroponte formed the Architecture
Machine Group at MIT Media Lab.
1968 Douglas Engelbert demonstrated the On-Line
System (NLS), another early hypertext program. NLS
consisted such critical ideas as an outline editor for idea
development, hypertext links, teleconferencing, word
processing and email, made use of the mouse pointing
device, windowing software and help systems.
History of Multimedia

1969- Nelson and van Damn at Brown University created

an early hypertext editor called FRESS.
1976- The MIT Architecture Machine Group proposed a
project entitled Multiple Media
1985- Negroponte and Wiesner cofounded the MIT Media
Lab, a leading research institution investigating digital video
and multimedia.
1989- Tim Berners-Lee proposed the World Wide Web to
the European Council for Nuclear Research (CERN)
1990- Kristina Hooper Woolsey headed the Apple
Multimedia Lab, with a staff of 100.
1991- MPEG-1 was approved as an international standard
for digital video. Its further development led to newer
standards, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, and further MPEGs, in the
1990s.
History of Multimedia

1991- Introduction of PDAs began a new period in use of

computers in general and multimedia particular. This
development continued in 1996 with the marketing of the
first PDA with no keyboard.
1992- JPEG was accepted as the international standard for
digital image compression.
1993- The University of Illinois National Center for
Supercomputing Applications produced NCSA Mosaic, the
first-fledged browser, launching a new era in Internet
information access.
History of Multimedia

1994- Jim Clark and Marc Anderssen created the Netscape

program.
1995- The JAVA language was created for platform-
independent application development
1996- DVD video was introduced; high quality, full length
movies were distributed on a single disk. The DVD format
can transform the music, gaming and computer industries.
1998- XML 1.0 announced as W3C Recommendation.
Handheld MP3 devices first made inroads into consumer
tastes in the fall, with the introduction of devices holding
32MB of flash memory.
2000- World Wide Web (WWW) site was estimated at over
1 billion pages.
Terminology

Terms and their use in multimedia

The terminologies are:
a) An integration of text, graphics, audio, animation and
video digital environment
b) The seamless integration of data, text, image of all
kinds and sound within a single digital environment.
c) The use of computer to present and combine text,
graphics, audio and video with links and tools that let
user navigate, interact, create and communicate.
Terminology

Discipline of terminology is based on its own theoretical

principles and consists primarily of the following aspects:
- analyzing the concepts and concept structures used in a
field or domain of activity
- identifying the terms assigned to the concepts
- in the case of bilingual or multilingual; terminology,
establishing correspondences between terms in the
various languages.
- compiling the terminology, on paper or in databases
- managing terminology databases
- creating new terms, as required.
Hypermedia

Media that allow users to explore documents in non-

linear ways by choosing from multiple paths through
information
Hypermedia
A computer-based information retrieval system that enables a
user to gain or provide access to texts, audio and video
recordings, photographs, and computer graphics related to a
particular subject.
Interactive Multimedia

The multimedia that allow users to browse forward

& backward or control on their own
Two types of Interactive Multimedia:
i) Linear not interactive and user have no control
over the content that is being showed to them.
Ex: movie
ii) Non linear- is interactive and users have control
over the content that is being showed to them
and also users are given navigational control.
Example: game
Interactive Multimedia

Two categories of graphics:

i) Vector graphics
- also called draw-type graphics, represent an image as a
geometric shape made up of straight lines, ovals, curves
and arcs.
Figure show a graphic, a pie chart made up of a circle and
lines.
- The instruction that create the circle and lines establis the
relationship between them.
Interactive Multimedia

i) Bitmaps
- called raster graphic. A bitmap represents the image as
an array of dots, called pixels.
- bitmap graphics are resolution-dependent and generate
large file sizes.
Interactive Multimedia

Creating a circle with vector program allow to specify only

one color for the entire circle
But, creating a bitmap circle allows to change the color of
every pixel in the circle
File size is a function of the image size, color depth and the
resolution.
Multimedia Developer

Multimedia developers work with computer information

systems, graphics and delivery protocol for software.
Design web portals for online learning programs, video
games and high- end interactive websites.
Multimedia developer positions require a bachelors degree
or equivalent in programming, media applications or any
other technology- related area.
Must possess the ability to manage projects and teams
required to complete the finished product.
Include artists, programmers, sound specialists and testers.
The person who direct the project.
Multimedia Developer

They must design, coordinate and deliver fully functioning

products that incorporate sound, full- motion video, text and
graphics into one application.
Ability to communicate and direct all of the development
staff included in producing the finished product.
Multimedia Project

An application or courseware or message in

multimedia form and presented through computer
Multimedia project involves a core team that
includes: producer, writer and director, who work
with other personnel, such as programmer,
photographer videographer, and voiceover artists.
Multimedia Linear

Linear means that we have to edit in a line, putting

one shot after another.
A multimedia presentation that presented auto run
Linear is not interactive and user have no control the
content that is being showed to them
Learners do not have control over sequence
Do not combining any forms of media content
Example- Movie
Multimedia Non-Linear

An interactive application
Allow interactivity via an interaction with presenter
Enhanced by combining several forms of media
content
Hypermedia is an example of non-linear content
This application arranged in menu format.
Multimedia Computer

Is computer that is optimized for high multimedia

performance, enabling rich multimedia experience.
A computer system that fulfill the gazetted
specification & using special logos

Computer Specification

Multimedia systems need a delivery system to get the

multimedia objects to the user.
Magnetic and optical disks were the first media for
distribution.
