study
Measures adolescent IQ in presence/absence of initial
PPD
Significant effect on boy adolescent IQ
Depressed moms adolescent boys scored 23 points
lower on IQ than well moms adolescent boys (P=.001)

296 dyads in a longitudinal study,

21 (7.1%) dyads developed PPD
Using Bayley Scales of Infant Development III to assess
language at 1 year mark
Poor language development significantly correlated with
length of PPD. 3.00 (5.15; 0.82) (P=.007)

Anxiety & Depression

96 dyads, 41 (42.7%) had PPD

Longitudinal study for 13 years
PPD exposed children significantly have higher rates of
adolescent anxiety compared to unexposed
children(OR = 3.56, 95% CI = 1.0811.71;
Wald = 4.36, df = 1, P = 0.037)

Depression

N = 8937 dyads total, of which 664 (7.3%) had PPD

Longitudinal study measuring adolescent depression at
age 18
Significantly increased odds of having MDD as
adolescent for those exposed to PPD than those who are
not [OR 1.67, 95% CI 1.1 to 2.6, p=0.026)]
Found more PPD in those who have lower education

Summary & My Conclusion

PPD exposure has significant correlation to later

cognitive impairments and psychopathologies in children
not only within infancy, but also to adolescents and
adult hood.
Very important to screen mothers and to support
mothers to minimize PPD.
What the Experts Recommend:

USPSTF: suggest screening all postpartum women for

depression when services are in place to ensure
appropriate diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up (Grade
B)
ACOG: recommends that clinicians screen patients at
least once during the perinatal period for depression
and anxiety symptoms using a standardized, validated
tool.
APA: Encourage universal screening of pregnant and
new mothers for depression. The perinatal period is
one of increased connection with healthcare systems for
most women, and an opportune time to screen for the
symptoms of depression.
