Suctioning

Aspiration of secretions through a catheter


attached to a suction machine or wall machine
outlet.

Indication:
- Help to maintain a patent airway by removing
secretions from the nares, pharynx, throat, and
trachea by introducing a suction catheter
PURPOSE:

1. To remove secretions that obstruct the airway


2. To facilitate ventilation
3. To obtain secretions for diagnostic purposes
4. To prevent infection that may result from
accumulated secretions
KINDS OF SUCTIONING

a. Oropharyngeal Suctioning
- removes secretions from the back of the throat.

b. Tracheal Suctioning
- extends into the lower airway and is indicated to
remove respiratory secretions and maintain optimum
ventilation and oxygenation in patients who are unable
to independently remove these secretions.

EQUIPMENT NEEDED:

- Sterile suction - Resuscitation bag


catheter #14 or 16 - NSS (in syringe)
for adult, #8 or 10 - Sterile cup for
for children) water
- Sterile gloves - Alcohol swabs
- Sterile towel - Sterile water-
- Suction source at soluble lubricant
80-120 mmHg jelly
- Sterile water, - Face shield.

CONTRAINDICATIONS


Facial or neck trauma/surgery
Acute head injuries
Bleeding disorders
Nasal bleeding
Epiglottitis or croup
Laryngospasm
Irritable airway
Gastric surgery
