Interview (April/May)
The object of the interview is to assess
the personal suitability and judge the
mental caliber of the candidate.

The candidate must exhibit an intelligent


interest in events happening around him
so that he appears to be a complete
personality.

The interview will carry 300 marks


(with no minimum qualifying marks).
Medical Test and Training
There is also a medical test, especially
rigid for IPS.
Out of the final candidates selected top
rankers are appointed as IAS officers.

Once appointed, all probationary officers


of the All India and Central Services
undergo a compulsory foundation training.

Age Relaxations
The upper age limit prescribed above will be relaxable.
(i) upto a maximum of five years if a candidate belongs to a Scheduled Caste or a
Scheduled Tribe.
(ii) upto a maximum of ithree years n the case of candidates belonging to Other
Backward Classes who are eligible to avail of reservation applicable to such candidates.
(iii) upto a maximum of five years for Central Government Servants in accordance with
the existing instructions of the Central Government. Ex-servicemen will also be eligible
for this relaxation. However the total relaxation claimed on account of Government
Service will be limited to 5 years.
(iv) upto a maximum of five years if a candidate had ordinarily been domiciled in the
State of Jammu & Kashmir during the period from 1st January, 1980 to the 31st day of
December, 1989.

Paper I : General Ability and Intelligence
The objective type questions with multiple choices in this paper will
broadly cover the following areas :

1. General Mental Ability - The questions will be


designed to test the logical reasoning, quantitative
aptitude including numerical ability, and data
interpretation.
2. General Science - The questions will be set to test
general awareness, scientific temper, comprehension
and appreciation of scientific phenomena of everyday
observation including new areas of importance like
Information Technology, Biotechnology, Environmental
Science.
3. Current Events of National and
International Importance - The questions
will test the candidates awareness of current
events of national and international importance
in the broad areas of culture, music, arts,
literature, sports, governance, societal and
developmental issues, industry, business,
globalization, and interplay among nations.

4. Indian Polity and Economy - The questions


shall aim to test candidates knowledge of the
Countrys political system and the Constitution of
India, social systems and public administration,
economic development in India , including its
indicators.
5. History of India - The questions will
broadly cover the subject in its social,
economic and political aspects. This shall
also include the areas of growth of
nationalism and freedom movement.

6. Indian and World Geography - The


questions shall cover the physical, social
and economic aspects of geography
pertaining to India and the World.
Paper II : Essay, Precis
Writing and Comprehension
This paper shall test candidates ability to bring to fore
his/her ideas on the given essay topic, arrange them in a
coherent, orderly, concise, understandable and lucid
manner in effective and grammatically correct language
free from spelling errors.

Further, this shall test candidates ability to understand


the given passages for precis writing and comprehension
and their skills to summarize the precis passage and
reply to the short-answered questions on the
comprehension passage.

The following will be subjects for the written examination

(a) For admission to Indian Military Academy, Naval
Academy and Air Force Academy:
1. English - This paper tests the understanding of the
English language.

2. General Knowledge - This tests the general knowledge,

and other matters of everyday observation.

3. Elementary Mathematics - This paper covers arithmetic,


algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and statistics.
(b) For Admission to Officers Training Academy (OTA):
1. English - This paper tests the understanding of the
English language.
2. General Knowledge - This tests the general knowledge,
current events, history of India, geography of nature
and other matters of everyday observation.

Note:

(i) The papers in all subjects will consist of OBJECTIVE-TYPE


(Multiple-Choice questions only). The question papers will be set in
English only.
(ii) Each paper will be of 2 hours duration and will carry 100 marks.
Standard of Examination
The standard of the paper in Elementary
Mathematics will be of the Matriculation
Examination.
The standard of papers in other subjects
will approximately be such as may be
expected of a graduate of an Indian

Interview and Special Tests
Personality tests - These tests are as follows

1. Situation Reaction Test (SRT) - Sixty situations are given and


the candidate is required to answer the reactions within 30
minutes.
2. Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) - A set of 12 pictures are
shown and the candidate is required to write a story in 3 minute
for each picture.
3. Word Association Test (WAT) - Sixty words are projected and
the candidate is required to make a sentence, in 15 seconds for
each word.
4. Group test - Group Test is conducted in batches of 8-10
candidates. The test consists of group planning, group discussion,
outdoor group tasks. The candidates are asked to take lectures on
certain topics.

EnglishThe question paper will be designed to test the candidates'


understanding of English and workman-like use of words.

General KnowledgeGeneral Knowledge, including knowledge of


current events and such matters of everyday observation and
experience in their scientific aspects as may be expected of an
educated person who has not made a special study of any scientific
subject. The paper will also include questions of History of India and
Geography of a nature which candidates should be able to answer
without special study.

The main aim of personality test is to judge the
suitability of candidates as officers of Indian
Forest Service.
The candidates appearing in the interview may

The personality test also aims at testing
leadership qualities, mental alertness, initiative,
balance of judgement, analytical capabilities
etc.

the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy, which is
followed by specialised orientation in Forest Service at
the Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy, Dehradun
