VALUES (CDIO VISION)


Students of the SFU were asked the following question: what are the most
important engineer professional, personal and interpersonal values?

The most important professional skills for students are:


1. TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE AND REASONING KNOWLEDGE OF

To develop important skills you can use several ways:

Video-, computer-based instruction, webinars, massive open


online courses (MOOC).
Preparing an individual improvement plan, including the following
steps: 1) identify the engineer knowledge, skills and attitudes you
would like to improve this year; 2) define your short-range (1
year) goals; 3) list future activities that you would like to
accomplish; 4) list possible paths open to you; 5) define your
long-range (1-3 years) goals; 6) Ask yourself: are my goals
realistic? How strong is my desire to achieve these goals? Are my
goals compatible with my strengths and weaknesses?
The purpose of the CDIO program

n engineer graduating from a university should


be able to come up with a new product or a new
technical idea, carry out all the design work for
its implementation (or give the necessary
instructions to those who will do it), introduce
what has happened in production.
The CDIO program will:

Prepare highly qualified specialists and


engineering teams capable of managing the life
cycle of a product
Develop not only the professional competencies
and skills of students, but also ensure their
personal growth
Allow graduates to realize their professional
potential both locally and internationally
Energy industry competency model
How are these competencies used in the workplace?

One of the difficulties that students have when taking math, English or science courses
is understanding how the course relates to the real world and the jobs that they wish
to pursue. Computer skills, problem solving and decision making are key requirements
in energy jobs.
Algebra increases problem solving skills which are needed when troubleshooting
problems in a power plant station, substation or on a power line.
Geometry using diagrams to install new equipment or wiring which requires
measuring and understanding dimensions and space.
Physics understanding the basic concepts of physics such as electrons and protons
helps in understanding how electricity is generated, moved along power lines, stepped
down in voltage and distributed to customers.
History/Humanities/Social Sciences understanding the experiences of other cultures
helps in teamwork, collaboration and problem solving.
English being able to speak, write and read English helps the individual follow
directions, ensure a safe job site, prepare reports and talk to the boss, coworkers, and
customers.
