Evolution of communication
Talking

Cavemen gathered around the fire to


discuss day to day activities. They used
grunts and sounds and then they
developed words to speak more clearly.

One day they decided to record their


activities and knowledge. They started
inscribing on caves.

Each tribe in North America had its own


signal and system. Mostly used to alert
danger.

Pigeons

Pigeons were effective as messengers due


to their natural homing abilities.
They were great helpers in World War I
and World War II.
Trained pigeon could carry up to75 g on
their back.
Semaphore flag/Maritime flag

It was designated for use on ships and


boats. Its a visual signal with hand-held
flag, rods, disk, paddles or bare hands.
Mostly used for emergency.
System transporting postcards, letters,
parcels.
The postal system was expensive, confusing
and seen as corrupt.
Letters were paid for by the recipient rather
than the sender, and were charged according
to the distance the letter had travelled and
the number of sheets of paper it contained.

Telegraph

Telegraph was the greatest invention in the


field of communication.Telegraph used
electrical signals conveyed via
telecommunication lines or radio.
People could transmit information across both
continents and oceans.
Morse code is a method of transmitting
text information as a series of on-off
tones, lights, or clicks that can be directly
understood by a skilled listener or
observer without special equipment.

The printing press began in 1436 (Johannes
Gutenberg). This invention led to an entire
new era of mass communication. By 2007
there were 7000 daily newspapers.

Telephone

Used for diplomatic purposes (only rich


people could afford). The telephone could
trasmit and receive sound.
This enabled humans to speak directly to
another from long distances.
In 1888 Heinrich Hertz demonstrated
radio waves.
World War 1 & 2 accelarated the
development of radio for military, aircraft
and land communication.
The radio provided a means of mass
communication.

When TV first came out in 1921, it was
black and white. It has been created to
transmit and receive moving images
with or without sound.

Television
From local to global
Computers are critical for communication and
are the centerpiece of information
technology.
Email, websites, blogs, social networking,
video chat.
Today, many traditional communication
modes including postal mail and landline
phones seem obsolete.

One of the newest way of communication
were cellphones. Cellphones are portable
telephones.
