Building Information Modeling is the process of

generating & managing building data during its life
cycle.
Its uses 3-dimensional,real time , dynamic
building modeling software to increase productivity in
building design & construction.
Introduction of BIM
In 1970’s Professor Charles M.Eastman, from
Georgia Institute of Technology,
BIM is basically the same as Building Product Model.
This term has used in his book and papers published.
In 1987 the term was popularized by Jerry
Laiserin,
the first implementation of BIM was as a virtual
Building Concept by Graphisoft’s ArchiCAD.
What is Revit Architecture ?
The Revit platform for building information
modeling is a design and documentation
system that supports the design, drawings,
and schedules required for a building project.
Building information modeling (BIM) delivers
information about project design, scope,
quantities, and phases when you need it
Introduction to Revit Architecture
History:
Individuals from the company PTC (Parametric
Technology Corporation) developed Revit.
They founded a new company on October
31,1997, and named it Charles River Software.
In 2000, they renamed the company Revit
Technology Corporation.
In 2002 Autodesk purchased the company.
Features:

Workflows that mirror the real world of

architecture
Capture Early Design Thinking
Deliver Projects more Efficiently
Bidirectional Associative Capability
Construction Modeling tools
Point clouds
Cont.
Schedules
Design Options
Material takeoff
Revit building maker
Conceptual energy analysis
Design Visualization
Revit Server
Autodesk 2D & 3D PDF integration
Revit File Types
Projects save in name.rvt extension
Family files save in name.rfa extension
Template files save in name.rte extension

Drawing Aids
Revit provides dimensions and other indicators that
help in building the design model accurately.
For Example when a wall is placed in a building, listening
dimensions and alignment lines appear to show its position
with reference to nearby walls .
1. Alignment lines
Alignment lines appear when the cursor is moved
horizontally or vertically.
2. Snaps
Snaps appear when the cursor is moved over geometric
points in a sketch, such as endpoint and midpoints.

I) Click Manage Tab Settings panel Snaps

II) Select Length & Angular dimension increments to

turn on the snaps.

III) Enter the snapping increments values. There is no

limit to enter the number of increments.
Temporarily Overriding Snap Settings:
3) Project Units:
The display format specified affects the
appearance of quantities on the screen and in a
print.
For example, Length may have a display format
of 1’5½”.
Click Manage Tab Project Setting panel
project Units (or) Enter UN command.
Levels
• Levels are 3D elements that are only visible in
views that intersect the level extents.
• It used to define a vertical height or story
within a building.
• Level are finite horizontal planes that act as a
reference for level-hosted element, such as
roofs, floors and ceilings.
Adding levels
Open a section or a elevation views

to add levels

Click home tab datum panel 

level

Place the cursor in the drawing area,

a vertical dimension appears from the

existing line, if you get the required

dimension , click that point and drag

the mouse horizontally to crate the

level
