“THE INDIAN SCHOOL OF BUSINESS (ISB) evolved from the need for a world-class business school in
Asia. The founders, some of the best minds from the corporate and academic worlds, anticipated the
leadership needs of the emerging Asian economies.”

John Calvin Portman Jr. (born December 4, 1924; Walhalla, South Carolina) is an
American neofuturistic architect and real estate developer widely known for popularizing hotels and
office buildings with multi-storied interior atria.
Portman is praised for his "cinematic"interiors artfully relating interior space and elements to the
individual.
PHILOSOPHY AND AWARDS
• PORTMAN is known for his innovative, responsive design solutions that are sensitive to the local culture
and the context in which they exist.
• Human beings are creatures of nature, perceiving their environment through the senses. Recognizing
human values and the human response to space, nature, and light
• We use technology, innovative systems and materials as tools to achieve their design philosophy.
Buildings should serve people, not the other way around.
This strong belief in how design should evolve and relate to people on a human level has sustained us and
provided the world with significant and memorable projects.
AWARDS
• 1978 Medal for Innovations in Hotel Design – National American Institute of Architects
• 1980 Silver Medal Award for Innovative Design – Atlanta Chapter, American Institute of Architects
• 1984 Urban Land Institute Award for Excellence – for Embarcadero Center
• 2009 The Lynn S. Beedle Lifetime Achievement Award – Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat
• 2013 Four Pillar Award - Council for Quality Growth
THEY HAVE-
• LECTURE THEATRES
The lecture theatres at ISB are equipped with a broadband communications
network, which ensures global connectivity. You can interact with a computer
or video-link with faculty, industrial leaders and other students anywhere in
the world. Audio-visual and videoconferencing facilities such as
overhead projectors, LCDs, fixed cameras and touch-pad systems will make
your learning process interactive and enjoyable.
• ATRIUM
The courtyard in the middle of the Academic Centre has an open-air atrium,
which is the social hub of the campus. Shops and other facilities such as dining
halls, a bank with ATM facilities, documentation centre, book store, mail room,
coffee shop and travel desk are located here.
• STUDENT VILLAGE
Student Villages form the four cornerstones of the campus. Each
Student Village can accommodate 130 to 210 students in a mix of
four-bedroom and studio serviced apartments. The apartments are
air-conditioned, fully furnished.
• RECREATION CENTRE
The state-of-the-art Recreation Centre has sports facilities such as a
swimming pool, fitness centre, and courts for badminton, squash,
table tennis, lawn tennis, volleyball and basketball.
• LAWNS
It is an ISB tradition for each batch to leave behind a souvenir, which
adds to the charm of the School. The Class of 2008 Lounge (Gifted by
the Class of 2008) and the Class of 2009 Amphitheatre (Gifted by the
Class of 2009) are the favourite haunts of the students on campus.
DESIGN DESCRIPTION
• The Master Plan and design of the Indian School of Business addresses four criteria:
the environment,
the Indian character,
interactivity, and
information technology.
• The project was fast-tracked to meet the school’s ambitious opening schedule.
• For example, the runoff from the limited rainfall is captured for treatment and reuse.
CONCEPT
The architects also drew on
symbolic and practical
functions of traditional
Indian architecture .The
campus is inspired by the
traditional nine-grid system
found in the many mantras
of Hindu
temples.
The 64- and 81-square Vastupurusha mandalas
PITHA MANDALA
Sunscreens and arcades are used extensively in the design, and many
buildings are elevated to enhance airflow, while water is used for its
cooling effects.

• SMOKE DETECTORS ARE INSTALLED IN EVERY HABITABLE AND NON HABITABLE SPACES.
• SPRINKLERS ARE HOWEVER INSTALLED ONLY IN PLACES WHERE THE FIRE LOAD IS MORE.
HVAC:
The use of thick walls cladded with light pink stone reduces the
load on the air conditioning system of ISB.
But however it has a centralized AC for the academic block
which is controlled by engineering department and can also be
individually controlled in each room.
The corridors on the second floor are also air conditioned but
mildly.
While on the first floor the openings on either side are not glazed
and plants towards the courtyard keeps the heat away while
breezy flows in from the opposite side.
