Introduction – CFD/MBD Co-Simulation

• The CFD and MBD solvers send and receive information via TCP socket communication during simulation runtime
• Allows cross platform communication
• CFD simulation runs on HPC, while MBD runs locally
• Middleware application communicates information between the solvers
• Forces and moments from the CFD model to the MBD model
• Displacements and rotations from the MBD model to the CFD model
• Information is exchanged at the CFD time increment

Introduction – CFD/MBD Co-Simulation

Purpose:

Simulate MBD rigid motion in MotionSolve while directly coupling with the CFD
solver AcuSolve to better model reality

Use Cases:

Loosely Coupled Tightly Coupled

Actuating rigid bodies Rigid bodies are forced to
that have an effect on the actuate due to the
surrounding fluid surrounding flow field

Pressure check valve

• The 3D problem is represented by a check valve that moves the shutter in accordance with the pressure
differential between the two sides.
• To speed up the problem we’ll consider only a section of the whole geometry.
• For this analysis, a 30 degree sector of the check valve was selected for study.
• The initial position of the valve is set such that the valve shutter is almost closed, then the inlet pressure
is ramped up and subsequent valve motion is analyzed.
