 GEOGRAPHY

 The Big North of Chile is one of the five natural regions
in which the Corporation for the Development of
Production divided Chile in 1950. It is characterized by
its desert climate, with the driest desert on the planet;
Atacama desert. There are three important ports: Arica,
Iquique and Antofagasta, which together with Calama
are the most important urban centers in the region.

 El Norte Grande de Chile es una de las cinco regiones

naturales en las que la Corporación para el Desarrollo de
la Producción dividió a Chile en 1950. Se caracteriza por
su clima desértico, con el desierto más seco del planeta;
Desierto de Atacama. Hay tres puertos importantes:
Arica, Iquique y Antofagasta, que junto con Calama son
los centros urbanos más importantes de la región.



The immensity of the desert with its mantle of silence and solitude, the fertile valleys in
the middle of a scene marked by the dryness and transparent skies of northern Chile have
always been a source of inspiration for poets and narrators. the narrative, the essay and
the journalism, stand out the figures of Lenka Franulic, Martín Cerda, Sady Zañartu,
Hernán Rivera Letelier and Mario Bahamonde.
 But poetry, that the north of our country has made its highest contributions to the
national literature. Beginning with Gabriela Mistral in the Elqui Valley, Andrés Sabella,
María Monvel, Romeo Murga, Óscar Hahn, Mahfúd Massís, Stella Díaz Varín, Braulio
Arenas, Tomás Harris, Soledad Fariña and Teresa Calderón stand out.

 La inmensidad del desierto con su manto de silencio y soledad, los valles fértiles en
medio de un escenario marcado por la sequedad y los cielos trasparentes de la zona norte
de Chile siempre han sido una fuente de inspiración para poetas y narradores.En el plano
de la narrativa, el ensayo y el periodismo, sobresalen las figuras de Lenka Franulic,
Martín Cerda, Sady Zañartu, Hernán Rivera Letelier y Mario Bahamonde.
 Pero la poesía, que el norte de nuestro país ha hecho sus más altos aportes a la literatura
nacional. Comenzando con Gabriela Mistral en el Valle del Elqui, y destacan Andrés
