Competency 1

Demonstrate Ethical and


Professional Behavior

Behaviors:
1. Make ethical decisions by applying the standards of the NASW Code of Ethics, relevant laws and
regulations, models for ethical decision-making, ethical conduct of research, and additional codes of
ethics as appropriate to context.

2. Use reflection and self-regulation to manage personal values and maintain professionalism in
practice situations.

3. Demonstrate professional demeanor in behavior; appearance; and oral, written, and electronic
communication.

4. Use technology ethically and appropriately to facilitate practice outcomes.


5. Use supervision and consultation to guide professional judgment and behavior.
1. Make ethical decisions by applying the standards of the NASW Code of
Ethics, relevant laws and regulations, models for ethical decision-making,
ethical conduct of research, and additional codes of ethics as appropriate

• I plan to use the NASW Code of Ethics, and


relevant laws and regulations to guide my
everyday practice with clients.
2. Use reflection and self-regulation to manage personal values and
maintain professionalism in practice situations.
• I used reflection and self-regulation to become aware of
my own personal biases and values before going into this
internship position
3. Demonstrate professional demeanor in behavior; appearance; and oral,
written, and electronic communication.

• Today, I demonstrated professional behavior in


appearance by adhering to the office dress code.
4. Use technology ethically and appropriately to facilitate practice
outcomes.
• I plan to use technology both, ethically and
appropriately as I start client record keeping on my
office computer.
5. Use supervision and consultation to guide professional judgment and
behavior.

• I plan to use my supervisors professional guidance, along


with my own professional judgement to make decisions in
my client’s best interest
Competency 2
Engage Diversity and Difference in Practice
Behaviors:
1. Apply and communicate understanding of the importance of
diversity and difference in shaping life experiences in practice
at the micro, mezzo, and macro levels.

2. Present themselves as learners and engage clients and


constituencies as experts of their own experiences.

3. Apply self-awareness and self-regulation to manage the


influence of personal biases and values in working with diverse
clients and constituencies.
Apply and communicate understanding of the
importance of diversity and difference in shaping life
experiences in practice at the micro, mezzo, and macro
levels.

As a professional, I have already learned


to appreciate diversity, but I plan to use it
more in practice by asking questions,
addressing biases, and using my knowledge
and understanding in order to better serve
clients in their sociocultural environment.
Present themselves as learners and engage clients
and constituencies as experts of their own
experiences.

I was able to present myself as a learner, whenever my field


supervisor asked me what were some things that I would like to get
out of working with him, and what are some things that I felt like I
could work on to become a better professional.
Apply self-awareness and self-regulation to
manage the influence of personal biases and
values in working with diverse clients and
constituencies.

I was able to use self-awareness, while


becoming knowledgeable about my own
personal biases, while playing an Ice-
Breaker, getting to know my co-workers.
Competency 3
Advance Human Rights and Social, Economic, and Environmental Justice
Behaviors
1. Apply understanding of social, economic, and
environmental justice to advocate for human rights at
the individual and system levels.
2.Engage in practices that advance social, economic,
and environmental justice.
I plan to use this in my internship by applying
theories of human need and social justice to
promote social and economic justice and human
rights. In the future I also plan to use strategies in
my practice that will include the advancement of
justice on the social, economic, and environmental
scales.
Competency Four
Engage In Practice-
informed Research and
Research-informed Practice
Use practice experience and theory to inform
scientific inquiry and research.

I plan to do this by using a client


situation or issue to research
scholarly information (i.e.,
domestic violence, juvenile
delinquency, truancy) and begin to
connect underlying issues
Apply critical thinking to engage in analysis
of quantitative and qualitative research
methods and research findings.

Iplan to do this by reading qualitative and


quantitative research studies on a client-
related issue and discussing the findings
with my field supervisor or one of his STAR
academic coaches/counselors.
Use and translate research evidence to inform
and improve practice, policy, and service
delivery.

I plan to do this after reading the


scholarly information about the client's
issue or situation, by compiling a service
plan for them with the aid of one of the
academic coaches.
Competency Five

Engage in Policy Practice


5.1- Identify social policy at the local, state, and
federal level that impacts well-being, service
delivery, and access to social services.
 I will do this by looking into what the policy
is for students to be able to receive food
assistance, such as food stamps, or WIC,
simply because there is a lot of food
insecurity that goes on among college
students.
5. 2- Assess how social welfare and
economic policies impact the delivery
of and access to social services.

 Researching the food stamp policy will help


because it directly affects the well-being of
those college students who are experiencing
food insecurity. The impact of this policy on your
clients and policy change ideas with Field
Instructor.
5. 3- Apply critical thinking to analyze,
formulate, and advocate for policies that
advance human rights and social, economic,
and environmental justice.

I plan to write a letter to one of the


state representatives about food
insecurity that exist among college
students and how it affects their
academics.
Competency Six
Engage with Individuals, Families, Groups,
Organizations, and
Communities
Behavior 6.1
 1. Apply knowledge of human behavior and
the social environment, person-in-
environment, and other multidisciplinary
theoretical frameworks to engage with
clients and constituencies.
I am able to use this behavior when sitting in on
sessions.. I am able to observe a student, their body
language, and the way they talk about certain
situations and from that I apply my knowledge of the
human behavior theories to somewhat justify the way
they act or react to certain things and I am able to
share that with the counselors.
Behavior 6.2
 2. Use empathy, reflection, and interpersonal
skills to effectively engage diverse clients and
constituencies.

I am able to use the skill of empathy, and


reflection when discussing clients with the
counselors or by simply participating in a group
session, which I have many times.
Competency 7

Organizations, and
Communities
7.1- Collect and organize data, and
apply critical thinking to interpret
information from clients and
constituencies
I was able to fulfill this
competency while interviewing
my client for the case
presentation that is due next
week.
7.2- Apply knowledge of human behavior
and the social environment, person-in-
environment, and other multidisciplinary
theoretical frameworks in interventions
with clients and constituencies.

After completing my interview I was


able to apply my knowledge of both,
the person-in-environment theory, and
the systems theory to some parts of my
clients life.
7.3- Develop mutually agreed-on
intervention goals and objectives based on
the critical assessment of strengths, needs,
and challenges within clients and
constituencies

 After completing my interview, and


allowing myself time to really go back over
everything, I was able to reach back out to
my client to provide her with some
suggestions and possible resources to help
7.4- Select appropriate intervention
strategies based on the assessment,
research knowledge, and values and
preferences of clients and constituencies

 After
providing my client with a list of resources, I
was able to discuss my clients situation with a co-
worker without giving too much information, and they
were able to provide me with a list of coping skills,
and possible interventions to try with the client.
