A building some calling "the world's first plastic

are
bottle built structure" has been unveiled in Taiwan. This
amazing building, dubbed the EcoARK, was constructed using a
whopping 1.5 million PET bottles to raise awareness about
the importance of recycling. Standing three-stories tall, the
EcoARK features an amphitheater, an exhibition hall, and a
screen of falling water collected during rainy periods for
use as air conditioning. The designers tout the building as
being "the world's lightest, movable, breathable
environmental miracle," yet insist it's strong enough to
handle typhoons and earthquakes.

The outer facades are entirely clad in natural coco-fiber broom heads. Nicknamed
“Mission Control,” the project is an exercise in teleportation, designed to take users from
the everyday hustle-and-bustle to another world, one of calm, quiet and focus. The
intention was to create an antithesis of a "contemplation space with landscape views and
flowing inside-outside space." Inside, “Mission Control” is a comfortable, serene space.
The interior walls and ceilings are clad with whitewashed plywood and wrapped
with sheep’s wool insulation, create a healthy, natural feeling environment which is
easily heated by body warmth and waste heat computers. A single skylight illuminates
the space, and in the middle are nested two back-to-back desks.
As the door clunks shut behind you, the box seals itself and the separation is complete. Let focus
begin.

Developed by the Institute of Advanced Architecture of Catalonia

(IAAC), the form of the house responds to its energy production
potential. The Fab Lab House is not only a piece of social and
technical engineering but also a design in full coherence to its
immediate environment. The design is conceived to create a
flexible structure which adapts to the climate of its
location and is both visually and environmentally
respectful towards its sorroundings. It makes the most out of
solar rays and natural drafts, and cuts therefore with the need
for artificial heating or AC.
Rather than built, the project was manufactured, as
digital manufacturing machine tools (known as 3D printers)
were used in the construction process. This process partakes
on the humanistic idea that things must be again produced in

Folding House
PROJECT DATA
Year | 2010
Function | House
Architects | M.A.Di.

An Italian architect is proposing a new model of housing that, unlike the traditional
residences, does not consist of a settled building, but in a folding and transportable house.
It can be assembled in just six hours with the help of three people. M.A.Di. was
designed by Renato Vidal, who guarantees his residences are built with safe and high-quality
materials – including anti-seismic certificate (required in Italy). There is no limit to the
number of modules that can be assembled, so it is possible to build houses of various sizes. To
install it, you don't need a concrete base: it can be placed directly on the floor – as long
as it is level. For those who want to fix their residence in a place for long periods, it is advisable to
build the house on foundation stakes, made available by the same company. The structures can
be customized with solar panels, gray water treatment systems, and LED lighting. In standard
production, the exterior walls are lined with wood veneers in the color chosen by the customer,
but there are other types of finish, such as plaster, aluminum, natural fiber and marble fillets, for
example.

Ateliereen Architecten has proposed a metal and wood

configuration for an observation tower in Peize, Netherlands.
Their plan is to construct a resistant, permeable and
playful structure. The project is designed so that people
climbing up the tower will have unique viewpoints. This tower is
also easily assembled from screws and bolts. The tower is a sober
landmark in the open countryside; recognizable, but
appropriate to the environment. Instead of focusing on the
lookout point, the road to it is designed as an experience.
During the walk to the top you do not have the feeling of
being in a tower, but on a path between the trees.
