Special

Consideration-
Faculty of Arts
What is Special Consideration?

Special Consideration is the process where you require additional time to

complete an assessment, or are required to defer an examination/test. This
process is for students who experience exceptional circumstances that prevent
them from being able to complete their assessment by the due date. Special
Consideration can provide students with:

■ an extension on their assignment

■ the rescheduling of a test/exam
■ Waiving the attendance requirement of class for the week
■ An alternative assignment (in serious circumstances)
Special Consideration During Semester & for Final

■ Extensions of more than two days: you must apply for Special Consideration

– Illness
– Ongoing disability/mental health issues (You are also eligible to register with
Disability Services)- This also applies to carers of somebody with a disability
– Hardship/trauma, including relationship breakdown

Final Points

■ Don’t be too proud to get help – Special Consideration exists to support you if your studies are
impacted by extenuating circumstances

■ Special Consideration is strictly confidential – Not even your unit coordinators and tutors know
why you have applied for Special Consideration if you don’t want them to know

■ Keep in contact with lecturers and tutors – It’s important to let them know if anything is going
wrong. You don’t need to tell them what has happened, but even telling them that you have
applied for Special Consideration is beneficial

■ DO NOT wait until you receive Special Consideration to submit your assignment. Keep
working on it and submit it when it’s done – your extension will only be granted for as long as
your documentation justifies it

■ ASK if you have questions – Not asking means you may not know what is available. If you are
having difficulties, come to Student Services and find out your options. It never hurts to ask

■ I am located on the second floor of the Menzies Building – If you’re experiencing difficulties
and need advice and assistance to get back on track, come up and see me or book an
appointment by emailing Jared.Price@monash.edu
