Harmonized Tariff System (HTS)

A universal commodity classification system that is used


to provide duty rates for virtually every item that exists.
• Developed by The World Customs Organization (WCO).
• Every item that is exported or imported is assigned a
unique ten-digit identification code.
– the first 6-digits of the classification number are
universal
– the last four may vary from country to country

Standard Transportation Commodity Code (STCC)

• An industry-defined code to describe a commodity that


a railcar can carry.
• The Association of American Railroads publishes
STCCs.
• A STCC is a seven digit numeric code representing 38
commodity groupings.
• STCCs are used on waybills and other shipping
documents.
