Career Opportunities in Hotel
Management
 For many people the thought of a career in hospitality, leisure and tourism brings up images of chefs, fitness instructors
and overseas reps .... and nothing else! Well of course, these are all careers that fall within these sectors, but there is so
much more to consider..... in fact much more, the hospitality industry alone employs 1 in every 10 people in the UK, that's
over 2.5 million people working in more than 30,000 establishments. Also, 1 in every 5 new jobs fall into this sector with
another 400,000 new jobs created by 2006 according to The British Hospitality Association. That's a lot of jobs !

 In the Indian context too the sector has witnessed booming growth in the past decade or two especially after the opening
of the economy. Besides India with its rich historical past and varied geographical locations like hill stations and beaches,
has always been very attractive tourist destination. Efforts by the government to promote India as a prime tourist
destination in the world is paying dividends.

People must eat and each year over 70 billion items of food are produced in the UK. Expenditure on food has continued
to increase with approximately 42 billions spent on food. Over 20% of the top 100 British companies are in food
manufacturing. Food and Drink manufacturers employ over half a million people and a recent manpower survey of
employment showed that 21% of employers anticipated increasing their workforce. Food retailing and wholesaling
employs nearly 900,000 people working in over 100,000 locations. Students should therefore be in no doubt that while
nothing is guaranteed a career in the food industry offers better opportunities for employment than practically any other
industry.
