INTRODUCTION

Water Feature operates mainly on the theory of water re-circulation: Suction portions and discharge
portions.
They require care and maintenance to keep them in a perfect state of clarity and disinfection.
Water Feature is subject to continuous contamination from foreign matter brought in by wind and
articles used in and about the water. Such contamination includes particles of dirt, organic matter,
bacteria, algae, hair, and mineral residue from chemicals and other debris.
Filtering is the mechanical process which helps to eliminate a large part of dirt which has been
introduced, but the growth of bacteria, algae and viruses can be prevented by adding chemical
products such as bromine for indoor formations and chlorine for outdoor. Water clarity is important
for appearance, hygiene and safety.
QATAR NATIONAL LIBRARY
REFLECTIVE WATER
FOUNTAIN

BASIC PARAMETERS:
FILTERING

The air and the environment are all continuously introducing dirt into the water. This dirt causes
cloudiness and becomes the food for bacteria, fungi and algae. Because of this, it is necessary to
remove it with the aid of filtering equipment.
The filter retains the dirt particles in the water, keeping it transparent and clear. It is important that
the filter is in a good state and that the entire volume of water is filtered within proper intervals.

WATER FEATURE SANITIZING & CHEMICAL BALANCE

Even though the water is clear and transparent, it can contain within it bacteria and viruses which
transmit diseases and infections. For this reason, it must be disinfected in order to eliminate all the
microorganisms and organic matters present.
Dosing pump allows Chlorine to be constantly added to the water, thus ensuring correct
disinfection. They work very simply. the dosing tank filled with the tablets to be administered. The
entry valve is regulated in order to achieve and maintain the desired chlorine levels in the water.
QATAR NATIONAL LIBRARY
REFLECTIVE WATER
FOUNTAIN

Chlorine readily combines with chemicals dissolved in water, microorganisms, small animals,
plant material, tastes, odors, and colors. These components "use up" chlorine and comprise the
chlorine demand of the treatment system. It is important to add sufficient chlorine to the water to
meet the chlorine demand and provide residual disinfection.
It is recommended that the feeder to be opened on a weekly basis to check the quantity present
and to replace them if necessary. (Warning: Take care when opening the feeder)
The Chlorine that does not combine with other components in the water is free (residual)
chlorine, and the breakpoint is the point at which free chlorine is available for continuous disinfection.
To ensure correct disinfecting of the water, the level of Free Available chlorine for outdoor applications
must be maintained between 0.5 and 2ppm.
Hydro Chloric Acid will control the pH Level in the water between 7.2-7.8.Specially in this case
we have added Aluminum Chloride dosing unit. Aluminum Chloride will make the bonds between the
small particles which floating on the water surface . So it will be bigger and it will increase the visibility
of the particles . It will be easy for the Maintenance. This All three Dosing systems has been installed
as one unit .The name is Clear Fountain System.

PREVENTION OF ALGAE

Algae are single-cell plant organisms, which can develop and multiply rapidly in the water,
especially when its temperature is lukewarm and exposed to sunlight. The algae spores are
introduced into the water by the wind, or they can be present in the water source.
The chemistry of algaecides is complex, because 46 species of clean – water algae exist.
Sunlight, temperature, pH, bacteria, chlorine residual and the mineral content of water affect the
presence and growth of algae.
To prevent their procreation, in addition to disinfectant, an anti-algae product must be used. Of
course, weekly vacuuming and cleaning will reduce the algae formation to an extent.
Algae grow easily on rugged joints and surfaces. Careful attention should be given to inspect
daily all angles, dead corners and spots, joints etc. this is where the algae starts and expands,
changing its color with time and getting more and more difficult to remove. Black algae are the
worst phase.

A – PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE
A preventive maintenance program, effectively implemented, will improve equipment operating
performance and extend equipment life.
Preventative maintenance should be required for pumps, suction lines, drains, piping, disinfection
equipment and control switches for the equipment in the facility.
The different ways of Preventive Maintenance:
a) Make any repairs needed to gauges, valves, test kits, or other equipment so they will be ready to
place back into service. Order any necessary parts from the manufacturer. Store all removed plugs,
caps, covers, and other loose parts in a secured cabinet.
b) Paint all exposed iron or steel with rust-preventive paint.
c) The piping system should be marked for easy identification of lines. This can be accomplished by
painting colored bands and placing markers on pipes with arrows to indicate direction of flow.
NOTE: Every 7 days the clear fountain system must be opened for inspection, Valves & Joints should be
inspected every 3 months.

d.) If your pump starts running louder or making unusual noises, shut it off and contact your water
feature professional. If your pump motor hums but will not start, turn off the power and check to see
if the impeller is clogged with debris. Make a habit of checking pump baskets regularly.

A.1 – PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE

The secret of maintaining your water feature, it is necessary is to implement correct prevention
treatment. To do so, the following must be carried out:
QATAR NATIONAL LIBRARY
REFLECTIVE WATER
FOUNTAIN

PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE AND TROUBLESHOOT

Daily:

1. Analyze the pH of the water and adjust it between 7 – 7.6 if necessary.

2. Analyze the level of Free Residual Chlorine Keeping it between 0.5 and 2ppm
3. Clean the water of leaves and insects.
4. Carry out proper vacuuming and wall scrubbing.
5. Open the strainers daily, the baskets on the suction line of the pumps and clean the basket properly. This will
prevent the impeller of the pump from getting damaged and elongates its life expectancy.

Weekly:

1. Check the sand filter.

2. Add the maintenance amount of your anti-algae product.

See to:

3. Keeping the water level correct, i.e. two thirds minimum level of water in the compensation tanks...
4. Proper ventilation takes place all the time.

PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE AND TROUBLESHOOT

B – BASIC TROUBLE SHOOTING GUIDE:

B.1 – Cloudy Water

When the water loses its clarity, it could be due to several causes:

• Water Feature filtering.

Treatment: Check the filtering system.

• High pH

Treatment: Analyze the pH to keep it between 7 and 7.6.

•Excessive organic residues.

Treatment: See the section “Irritation of eyes and skin, and bad smells”.

•Algae formation.
Treatment: See the section “Algae formation”.

FOUNTAIN
PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE AND TROUBLESHOOT
B.2 – ALGAE FORMATION
If algae have formed in your water feature water, treat them immediately, since the longer they are
there, the more difficult it will be to remove them.
Case A – Presence of algae on the walls and bottom, with the water feature water clean and
transparent.
Treatment: With the filtering equipment off, apply Chlorine on the surface where algae formed.
Immediately afterwards add anti algae (3.5 gr. for each 100 m3 of water).
It is important to proportion these products directly into the areas where algae have been noticed.
Leave the products to act for about 8 hours. Then BRUSH the walls and bottom. Remove the dead
algae with the bottom-cleaner, sending the water directly to the drain and Backwash the filters.
Case B – Presence of algae on the walls and/or bottom, with the water feature water cloudy and
green.
Treatment: With the filtering equipment off, carry out shock chlorine 30 gr. for each m 3 of water or (3 tablets for
each m3 of water). Immediately afterwards add anti algae (3.5 lts for each 100 m 3 of water) and then liquid flocculent
(1 lt. for each 100 m3 of water). Leave the products to act for about 8 hours. Then BRUSH the walls and bottom.
Remove the dead algae with the bottom-cleaner, sending the water directly to the drain and backwash the filter. Then
filter as many hours as are required to obtain clean and transparent water.
