When did you start activities that support the GINA Objectives ? A Worshop was carried out on December 1995 in Buenos Aires with the participation of 4 members of the
GINA Board (Tim Clark, Leo Fabbri, Martyn Partridge, Ronald Dahl). Thirty pulmonologists and
allergologists participated from 4 different countries (Chile, Paraguy, Uruguay and Argentina).
How would you describe your work as a GINA leader in your country? The first activity was the dissemination of a broad systematic and intensive national educational program
based on GINA guidelines, which was implemented in Argentina from 1996 to 1999 and reached 10000
family doctors, pediatricians and primary care physicians from all over the country. It focused mainly on
early diagnosis and therapeutic recommendations to achieve a better asthma control and to reduce asthma
morbidity and mortality. This educational program was carried out together with allergologists and
pulmonologists.
Four consecutive marathons (1999-2002) were organized in Buenos Aires (Argentina) under the slogan
“For a better breathing” with more than 2000 participants each year.
World asthma day: different activities have been organized toghether with the AAAeIC and the AAMR to
celebrate this day.

If yes please describe briefly Fortunately, in 2014 we succedded since the National Ministry of Health launched a National Program for
the Control of Chronic Respiratory Diseases (CRD). It includes asthma and COPD to reduce CRD in the
adult population in Argentina by strengthening the capacity of healthcare services to detect and manage
CRD and improving access to treatment.
In 2018, the National Ministry of Health, as part of this National Program, is going to launch the zero
asthma mortality campaign in the 5-39 age group (~40 deaths/year). With this aim, the cause of death,
level of exacerbations, quality of care, and previous patient’s therapy during the two previous years are
assessed to specifically target them.

World Asthma Day: we are planning activities together with the Argentina Association of Allergy
and Clinical Immunology (AAAeIC) and the Argentine Association of Respiratory Medicine
(AAMR).
Posgradute Education Course on Asthma during the Argentine Federation of Family and General
Medicine (October)
Conferences about the 25th anniversary of GINA during the annual meetings organized by the
AAAeIC and the AAMR.
As a member of the advisory committee of the National Program for the Control of Chronic
Respiratory Diseases (CRD), I will continue working for the inclusion of GINA guideline
recommendations in all the educational material for primary care physicians and patients
distributed at public health services by the National Ministry of Health

How would you describe your work as a GINA leader in your country? - Member in the organizing committee and speaker in the annual congress of “Bronchial Asthma” in
celebration of the “World Asthma Day” an annual meeting held since 1993 at different locations in Egypt
(oral presentations and postgraduate training courses (organized by the Egyptian Society of Allergy and
Immunology of which I am a board member)
-The objectives of these meetings is to update physicians of different specialties and from different
institutions and locations in Egypt regarding pediatric and adult bronchial asthma and to deliver updates on

-In 2008 GINA MED (Mediterranean ) joined the Egyptian Celebration of the “World Asthma Day” and

challenge in the guidelines implementation process.
- Most controllers are available in Egypt but for many Egyptians price is a significant barrier to
compliance and adherence to treatment in face of our economic problems.
What are your expectations from the GINA Board? How may it be of assistance to you in your efforts I hope the GINA will re-endorse the GINA MED initiative as in the past (Current website removed all

Government (Ministry of Health and Oblast health Departments) regulate the number of asthma patients,
which can be registered in primary care centers. Asthma medications are centrally purchased by the
government and allocated within regions. Number of asthma patients has to fit to the amount of medications
provided.
Overuse of antibiotics, intravenous infusions of dexamethazone, other corticosteroids, and IV theophylline
in the hospitals and outpaatient facilities, by ambulance
Underuse of inhaled corticosteroids and local treatment of asthma
Because of that high level of asthma ambulance calls and hospitalization rate.
