Who is he?
• Utsman ibn ‘Affān was one of the sahaba.
An early convert to Islam, he played a major
role in early Islamic history, most notably as
the third Caliph of the Rashidun Empire,
Prophet's son-in-law and the compilation of the
Qur'an.
CONVERTION TO ISLAM
• Uthman was an early convert to Islam and is said to have
spent a great amount of his wealth on charity. After a
discussion with his friend Abu Bakr, decided to convert to
Islam, and Abu Bakr took him to Muhammad to whom he
declared his faith.
• Uthman thus became the fourth male to convert to Islam.
His conversion to Islam angered his clan, the Banu
Ummayyah.
• The only two people who supported Uthman's decision were
Saadi, a maternal aunt of Uthman, and Umm Kulthum, who
was his stepsister and who had also converted to Islam.
TITLES
• Uthman was elected as the third Caliph,
with the title “Amir Al-Mu’minin“.
• “Dhun-Nurayn”, means “The two lights”,
because of his marriage with two of the
Prophet Muhammad’s daughters.
CHARACTERISTIC
• Soft and shy - He is popular for being soft and
shy. Prophet Muhammad himself said that he is his
most blushful friend.
• Generous – He ever bought a well from a Yahudi.
And donated it for public-use.
• Patient – When he joined Islam, his uncle tortured
him by binding him and and forced him to betray
Islam. And he won’t betray Islam whatever
happens to him. Seeing his niece is so persistent,
his uncle lets him join Islam.
His Reign Period
• Uthman's reign extended in the west to Morocco, in the
east to South east Pakistan, and in the north
to Armenia and Azerbaijan.
• During his period, the first Islamic naval force was
established, administrative divisions of the state were
revised, and many public projects were completed.
• Utsman ruled for twelve years. The first six years were
marked by internal peace and tranquillity, but during the
second half of his caliphate a rebellion arose.
REBELS & ASSASINATION
• From Egypt a group of about 1,000 people were sent to
Medina, with instructions to assassinate Uthman and
overthrow the government.
• The rebels went to the election comitees beside Utsman,
asking them to be the caliph instead of Utsman, which they
declined.
• The rebels neutralized the bulk of public opinion in Medina
and Uthman's faction could no longer offer a united front.
