EARTHQUAKE

DRILL
Objectives:
 To ensure the safety of workers, students and
staff during and after the damaging earthquake.
 To help Administrators, Department Heads,
Government Officials, Managers, and their
Disaster Action Groups to design a specific
Response plan.
 To train on the proper actions and responses
during an earthquake.
 To test various elements of the response plan
designed by the Disaster Control Group (DCG).
Earthquake o Lindol

Magnitude vs Intensity
 Earthquake magnitude
 Magnitude of an earthquake is a value that tells a reader the amount
of seismic energy released by it. It is a single value and is not
dependent upon distance from the epicenter of the earthquake. It is
calculated by measuring the amplitude of the seismic waves
(through a seismometer). The scale which is used to measure
magnitude of an earthquake is called Richter magnitude scale.
 Intensity
 Intensity of an earthquake is its property that indicates the effects
and damage caused by it. intensity varies as we go farther from the
epicenter of the earthquake. It can be determined by taking stock of
the devastation in the areas affected by the earthquake. The scale
used to describe the intensity of earthquakes is called Mercalli, as it
was developed by Giuseppe Mercalli in 1902.
FAULT LINE
 Ang kataga na fault line ay
tumutukoy sa isang geolohikal
na resulta ng paggalawa ng mga
fault plates. Ang fault lines ay
pisikal na manipestasyon ng
paggalaw ng lupa at kadalasang
nakikita sa ibaba ng lupa.Ang
paggalaw ng mga fault o
tectonic plates na ito ay
nagreresulta sa isang
seismolohikal na phenomena,
na kilala bilang lindol o
earthquake sa Ingles
4 Stages of Earthquake Drill
Stage 1 – Planning/Organizing the Earthquake Drill.

Stage 2 – Developing the Building Emergency

Evacuation plan.

Stage 3 – Orientation Prior to the Conduct of

Earthquake Drill.

Stage 4 – Actual Conduct of Earthquake Drill.

Stage 1
Planning/Organizing the Earthquake Drill
A.) Form an Institution’s Disaster Control Group (DCG)
composed of several teams with specific task.

2. Acquire the most recent building grounds layout plan.

3. Obtain a layout plan for each building that shows the rooms, corridors,
staircases, and exit points.

4. Conduct building ocular inspection and identify safe and unsafe spots
inside the grounds.

SAFE AREAS: UNSAFE AREAS:

- Under sturdy tables - Windows and Glass

- Strong supported doorway - Book shelves
- Open/Clear area - Cabinets and Furniture
- Hanging Objects
- Elevators
- Power lines/Poles
- Bridges and flyovers
Stage 2
Developing the Building Earthquake Evacuation Plan
The BEEP should consider to utilize all available open spaces
nearest the building that are evaluated as safe from falling debris
and other materials that may cause injuries to employees.

Stage 3
Orientation Prior to the Conduct of Earthquake Drill

1. Prepare the employees before the Earthquake Drill.

- draw floor plan of the office.

- identify safe and unsafe spots.
- take measures to correct this matters.
- introduce to the employees the suggested
evacuation routes prepared by the building DCG.
- introduce to the employees their designated
evacuation area.
Stage 3…
2. The main concern during the shaking is how to
protect oneself.

(during shaking)
- Open the door
- turn off anything that may cause fire
- Duck, Cover and Hold
- Look for falling debris, safe spots,
danger spots
- Keep calm and don’t panic
Stage 3…
Practice… Practice… Practice…

DUCK.

COVER.

HOLD.
Stage 3…
3. After the shaking;
- be alert and don’t panic.
- Listen for instruction from office head.
- walk out from the office in an orderly
manner & watch out for falling debris.
- Don’t Run, Don’t Push.
- Don’t bring your things
- follow the evacuation plan, proceed to the
designated evacuation area & wait for
further instruction.
- NEVER go back to the building yet.
Stage 3…
4. Head Counting for employees once all are
already in the evacuation area.
Stage 4
Actual Conduct of Earthquake Drill
1. Prior to the scheduled drill, inform the neighborhood regarding the
drill.
2. Identify and assign observers for each exit point of the building &
evacuation areas for comments & observations during the
evaluation of the drill.
3. For the actual drill – (assumption)
- 1 minute blowing of Siren or ringing of bell signifies 1 minute
strong earthquake
- person cannot stand
- building may have been damaged but not collapsed.
- possible falling of objects including glass windows.
- NO immediate assistance for several hours.
- possible injuries, fear, panic among employees
