“Pancho Rabbit and

the Coyote” Lesson

By: Simon, Briony,
and Savanah
Example:
English: “Backpack “

Introduction Spanish: “Mochilla “

❖ We will start by talking about what the words

“migrant, migration, immigrant and immigration”
mean

❖ Then we will explain that since the story takes

place in Mexico, the author uses some Spanish
words

❖ We will show pictures of each vocabulary word,

say the word in English, and then have them
repeat the words in Spanish out loud as a class.

❖ Then we will read the story and while one of us is

doing that, another person will hold up and point
to the Spanish word and picture that we showed
in the beginning. 2
Activity ❖ Pass out blank backpack
template
❖ Pass out “Items” sheet with all
of the different things they
can “buy” to fill their
backpack
❖ Tell students they have
$20.00 and can choose the
items they think would be
helpful on their migration
journey
❖ Remind them that they will be
traveling in the desert of
Mexico just like Pancho
Rabbit did, and describe the
weather there
❖ This lesson incorporates
math but it also gets students
making decisions about what
will be useful for their
migration journey and what
they truly care about.

Big
concept
We want the students to understand a
little bit about what people have to go
through when they leave their home to
migrate to the U.S. and how that affects
their lives. What do families have to
leave behind? What hardships do they
face?

Empowering the Students!

◂ Students have the opportunity to choose what

they would take with them and explain why. But
also share what they had to leave behind.
◂ We will talk with the students about immigration
where they can discuss how it affects those
families as well as the obstacles that are faced
when migrating.
