INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE(IK)

• A knowledge that is unique to a


given culture or society.
• It contrasts with the international
knowledge system generated by
universities, research institutions and
private firms. (Warren 1991)
INDIGENOUS MEDIA
• …owned, controlled and managed by indigenous
peoples in order for them to develop and
produce culturally appropriate information in
the languages understood by the community by
utilizing indigenous materials and resources,
reflecting community needs and interests,
visions and aspirations, and independent from
vested interest groups.

ORAL TRADITION
• A form of tradition wherein the
elders recount their culture to
their children and grandchildren
through legends, folktales, epics,
mythologies, and folk songs.
EXAMPLES OF ORAL TRADITION
• LEGEND
It is a fiction which tells about the origin of
something.

• FOLKTALE
It is a narration about the characteristics of
the time and place in which the story is told.

• EPIC
It tells a heroic adventure of a main character
that sometimes possesses extraordinary powers.
Ramayana
• MYTHOLOGY
It is similar with a legend and folktale but it
focuses more on creation. Stories of mythology also
tell how the lives of mortals or humans are
influenced by the gods.
• A LIBRARY is an ideal venue to get information
as it has a wide collection of books from
different subject areas. It also has other
learning resources such as magazines and
journals.

• Oldest library in the world.
• Approximately built in 300BC located in
Alexandria, Egypt.
• No longer exist (Julius Caesar accidentally
burned it down during the Alexandrian War)
National Library of France
• Oldest public library in the world.
• Built in 1368.
• Still exists.
The National Library of the
Philipppines
• Established on August 12, 1887.
• Located in Ermita, Manila
TODAY’S GENERATION
• Today’s generation has access to information
from different websites of various institutions
such as government agencies, schools and
organizations, through internet.
• Through the internet, users can also visit
different websites where they can view and
download text, audio and video information.

• Divide the class into groups with 3- 4


members.
• Each group will interview two elders coming
from two families. They will ask about
cultural beliefs or practices in the community
valued by the elders. Students need to
identify and gather information to at least
two cultural beliefs or practices.
PERFORMANCE TASK:
COOPERATIVE LEARNING INTERVIEW ACTIVITY

• Encode the information on a short bond paper,


identify the source of information.
• Students will interview 10 schoolmates and find
out if these cultural beliefs or practices are still
known and being valued by their generation.
(Example 3 out of 10…)
• Submit it to the teacher via email not more
than 2 weeks after it was assigned.
