hybrid composites__ .

UNDER GUIDENCE OF:-

OBJECTIVE

Ø To develop an alternate layer hybrid fiber composite using sugarcane fibre and
glass fibre.

Ø To investigate the effect of hybridization on its mechanical and tribological

properties.
v
Ø To decrease the use of synthetic fibre
INTRODUCTION

ØNatural fiber reinforced polymer matrix composites

are very sensitive to environment. This can be
recognized in the composite and can be advantageously
utilized for the development of biological degradable
composites.

Ø Hybridization of natural fiber with stronger and more

corrosion-resistance synthetic fiber, for example, glass
fiber or carbon fiber can improve the stiffness, strength,
as well as moisture resistant behavior of the composites
and hence a balance between environmental impact and
performance could be achieved.

Ø
ØIn this research, the study focuses on the investigation of the
effect of erosion testing for different parameters and their effect
on mechanical properties by alternate stacking of glass and
sugarcane fibers .

ØTo study how effective the fabrication was on its mechanical and
erosion properties with respect to the regular glass fiber
composite.
Ø
ØThus with this study the extent of applicability of hybrid over
synthetic and natural fibers for making
Pipelines, automobile interiors, structural fields large
marine applications, land transport application such as rail coach
parts, conveyor belts, and multi leaf springs and storage tanks.
ØThe natural fiber reinforced composites are reasonably
strong (Though lower than that of Synthetic fibers)
light weight
free from health hazards
biodegradable.

ØLimitations:-
lower modulus
poor moisture resistance to absorption
low strength.
ADVANTAGE OF HYBRIDIZATION

ØThe properties of the natural fiber reinforced composites can be improved by

hybridizing with high strength synthetic fibers.

ØThe concept of hybridization gives flexibility to the design engineer to tailor

the material properties according to the requirements, which is one of the major
advantages of the composites.

ØInterspersing the two or more kinds of fiber in a single matrix forms the
hybrid composites.
LITERATURE REVIEW

ØEL-Tayebstates in this investigation that abrasive wear behavior of sugarcane

reinforced fiber is much influenced by the length of fiber(chopped), it is sensitive
to variation of normal load and wear is less for long fibers.

“Abrasive wear performance of untreated sugarcane fibre reinforced

polymer composite”, journal on material processing technology,206(2008)305-
314.

Ø EL-Tayebstates in this investigation that sugarcane fiber reinforced

polyesters composite offer a good degree of wear resistance and friction
coefficient compare to GRP when sliding against stainless steel.

“A study on potential of sugarcane fiber composite for

tribologicalapplications” , WEAR - 265 (2008) 223-235.
ØEL-Tayeb states in this investigation that chopped sugar cane fiber-
reinforced polyester composite with 5mm fiber length is most favorable
among 1mm and 10mm because it gives wear resistance highest amongst
them. He further states that thickness of the fiber also contributes to the wear
resistance.

“Two body abrasive behavior of untreated sugarcane and reinforced glass

fibers polyester composites”, WEAR 266(2009)220-232

ØEL-Tayebstates in this investigation that 5mm fibrelength has 20% - 50%

less weight loss. Due to non abrasive nature of SCF it helps to make
protective layers which reduces damage.

materials”, journal on material and design,30(2009)1151-1160
