Pendahuluan

History
 The first recorded tribologist – pouring lubricant
(water?) in front of the sledge in the transport of the
statue of Ti – from a tomb at Saqqara, Egypt
 The Leonard-Da-Vinci (1452-1519) first postulated a
scientific approach to friction. He deduced a law
governing the motion of a rectangular block bearing
over a flat surface and introduced the concept of
coefficient of friction as the ratio of the friction force to
normal load. But his work remained unpublished for a
long time.

 The essential laws of viscous flow were postulated by


Newton in 1668, any scientific understanding of
lubricated bearing operations did not occur until the
end of 19th century.
 The beginning of understanding of principles of
hydrodynamic lubrication was made possible with the
experiments did by Bauchamp Tower (1884) and theoretical
interpretations of N.P.Petroff (1883) and Osborne Reynolds
(1886). Since then the hydrodynamic bearing theory and
practice has been extremely rapid developments to meet the
demand for reliable bearings in new machinery.
 Tribology is relatively new subject and got importance only
during 1966. Coined by Dr. H. Peter Jost in England in 1966:

“The Jost Report”, provided to the British Parliament –


Ministry for Education and Science, indicated… “Potential
savings of over £515 million per year ($800 million) for
industry by better application of tribological principles and
practices.”

Tribology Applications
Penerapan ilmu Tribologi sangat tergantung pada fungsi
masing-masing alat, seperti:

 Engsel pintu atau sendi pada manusia membutuhkan


gaya gesek yang rendah.
 Rem, clutch, gear atau antara ban kendaraan dan jalan
membutuhkan gaya gesek yang tinggi.
 Gerinda, polisher, dan turning membutuhkan wear rates
yang tinggi.
 Metode untuk mengurangi gesekan dan keausan adalah
dengan cara melakukan pelumasan di antara permukaan
kontak
