In 2011, the community of

Roosevelt Island, which has

a significant population of
Japanese residents, was
touched by the effects of the
tsunami that devastated
Japan.

The tragedy broke our

hearts and we chose to act.

We created a Cherry
Blossom Festival to raise
funds for the victims and
engender hope.
The Cherry Blossom Festival
became an annual event ,
welcoming more than
10,000 visitors.

We commemorated our first Cherry Blossom Festival with this plaque “CELEBRATION OF HOPE” April 30 ,2011
This grove of Cherry Trees is dedicated in an act of solidarity with THE JAPANESE PEOPLE by the Roosevelt Island
Residents Association and The Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation.
