India : Where We Stand?
 India, the world’s largest food grain producer, also has the world’s largest
hungry population -- over 200 million. It ranks a poor 66th among 88
developing and transitional countries in the 2008 Global Hunger Index (GHI-
2008), says a report released by the Washington-based International Food
Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), ahead of World Food Day (October 16). 

 Among the 17 major Indian states, Madhya Pradesh had the most severe
hunger levels, followed by Jharkhand and Bihar. Even states that
experienced good economic growth like Maharashtra, Gujarat and
Chhattisgarh had high levels of hunger. 

 Hunger levels ranged from ‘serious’ to ‘extremely alarming’, with 12 states in
the ‘alarming’ category. Not one state witnessed ‘low hunger’ or ‘moderate
hunger’. Even relatively prosperous Punjab, and other states like Kerala,
Haryana and Assam now fall within the ‘serious’ bracket.  

 India’s slightly better performance over Bangladesh was because of higher


agricultural productivity. But it fared worse than Bangladesh in the area of
child mortality. 

 India’s poor performance was driven by its high child under nutrition and
calorie insufficiency. Underweight children made the greatest contribution
to the ISHI in most states, followed by calorie deficiency and child mortality.

Steps that should be
taken
National, regional and international
cooperation to enhance food security and
reduce trade distortions.
There should be social safety nets to
minimize the consequences on the poor of
the global economic slowdown and higher
food and energy prices.
Increase emergency food aid to enable WFP
and other food-aid programmers to
provide emergency food assistance.
Promote midday meal schemes.
Transform agriculture in order to ensure
long-term, sustainable productivity

Promote livelihood to lower class and lower
middle class.
Some more action plans for the rural population
like NREGA and done with more transparency.
Government should work together with NGOs
and Corporate sectors to overcome with it.
Develop, for both urban and rural areas, the
infrastructure and services that will enhance
the productive capacity of enterprises and
facilitate integration into the global economy.
Adopt urban development policies that will
upgrade slums and improve the availability of
basic services.
Promote literacy schemes for both boys and
girls so that the literacy level will reach to
100%.

Prevent wastage of foods at great level.
Suggestions by FAO
According to Food & Agriculture
organization(FAO), to break the hunger poverty
trap, action is urgently needed on two fronts
making food accessible to the most vulnerable,
and helping small producers raise their outputs
and earn more.
They recommend twin track approach which aims
to create opportunities for the hungry to
improve their livelihoods by promoting
agricultural and rural development which also
involves policies and programmes, such as
social safety which enables direct and
immediate access to food by the hungry.

But Who cares?
Primarily households are throwing
away in the order of 25 percent
of the food that they are buying.
Most of which is also perfectly fit
for eating.
In rich nations, food is generally
plentiful and affordable. As a
result, leftovers after a meal are
often discarded. The report says
only in the United States, 48
billion dollars worth of food is
thrown away each year.(VOA)
Wastage of food grain from the
field to the market is also high.
