DISSERTATION

DIAGRIDS SYSTEMS
BACKGROUND
Today’s architects have been losing interest in aesthetic expressions provided by
conventional braced tubes composed of orthogonal members and large diagonals because
they always seek something new and different. Diagrid structures providing great structural
efficiency without vertical columns have also opened new aesthetic potential for tall building
architecture. With their distinguished compositional characteristic, diagrid structures are often
strongly expressed on the building facades, making them accentuating elements in the
existing orthogonal urban context. (Design and Construction of Steel Diagrid Structures , by
K.Moon cited by NSCC 2009).

Recently the diagrid structural system is widely used for tall buildings due to its structural
efficiency and aesthetic potential provided by the unique geometric configuration of the
system. This paper reviews research published on the structural performance of diagrid
system, its need and importance, evolution, construction and design parameters. (IJIRSET,
volume 7, issue 2, Feb 2018).
The diagrid structural system has been widely used for recent tall buildings due to the
structural efficiency and aesthetic potential provided by the unique geometric configuration
of the system. Constructability is a serious issue in diagrid structures because the nodes of
diagrids are more complicated than those of conventional orthogonal structures. (Optimal
structural configurations for tall buildings).
AIM
 The goal of this paper is to identify this expression and call attention to
its form and details and to present diagrids as an alternative to replace
the conventional orthogonal pattern.

OBJECTIVES
 The objective of this study is to understand the need and importance of
diagrids and their evolution over a period of time along with
sustainability concepts.
 The paper would also deal with the working principles of diagrid
structures and its design parameters and construction by means of case
studies and analytical observation of behavior under certain conditions
like seismic activities and heavy wind loads.
 The concepts of diagrids, features, performance characteristics and
structural details would also be covered through this paper.
SCOPES
 Various architects, designers conclude that, although diagrids brought
a revolution in the field of construction as well as architecture even so
has some major limitations when it comes to appearance and overall
exterior envelope of the building as all have similar aesthetics due to
diagrids as it is restricted to it.
 The paper would deal with possible outcomes in order to overcome
such limitations.
 The diagrids even if been a highly successful architectural and
constructional concept even though the full potential of it has yet not
been explored. The paper would also help in visualizing such future
scopes for Diagrids.
