Architecture at SWA

(with some math)

By Nick, Aaryan and Celestine

Looking for math
You could say there were
quite a few steps involved
Staircase Functions in this…
This part was absolutely vital
to our presentation…
Modulus Functions
Fun Fact: The “B” in “Benoit B.
“Fractal” sine curves Mandelbrot” stands for “Benoit
B. Mandelbrot”.
This work speaks volumes
Volumes of revolution of our mathematical
ability…
Calculating the Volume
The quintic curve modelling the roof is:

Now to find the volume of the roof we would have to rotate this line about
the vertical line:

However because this is hard I would shift the function to the left by -4.084
to be able to rotate it around the y axis.
To rotate this curve about the y axis we need to express the equation in
terms of x.

Next we perform volumes of revolution:

Why bother?
The world of architecture,
design and construction is
relying more and more on
mathematical models of the
structures.
