Greenhouse Effect:
What is the need of Electric vehicle
Types of electric vehicle:

Hybrid Electric Vehicles
(HEVs)
Plug-In Hybrid Electric
Vehicles (PHEVs)
All-Electric Vehicles (EVs)
Hybrid electric vehicle:
 Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) are powered by an internal combustion engine
(using alternative or conventional fuel) and an electric motor, which uses
energy stored in the batteries.
 The extra power provided by the electric motor allows for a smaller engine,
resulting in better fuel economy without sacrificing performance.
 HEVs do not need to be plugged in.
 They use regenerative braking and an internal combustion engine to charge
the battery.
 The vehicle captures energy normally lost during braking by using the electric
motor as a generator and storing the captured energy in the battery.
 The energy from the battery provides extra power during acceleration.
Plug in Hybrid Electric Vehicle:
 Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are powered by conventional or
alternative fuels as well as electric power stored in a battery.

 Using electricity from the grid to run the vehicle some of the time
costs less and reduces petroleum consumption compared with
conventional vehicles.

 PHEVs have larger battery packs than HEVs.

 This makes it possible to drive using only electricity for some distance
(about 10 to 40 miles), commonly referred to as the "all-electric range"
of the vehicle.
Types of batteries used in electric vehicle

• Lead acid
• Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH)
• Nickel-Cadmium (NiCad)
• Lithium Ion
• Tesseract uses 512 li-ion batteries
Lithium ion batteries:
 At present Lithium ion(Li) is the major
source of powering the EV’s.
 In a Lithium-ion battery, the energy is
stored in an electrochemical manner which
leads to slow charging of the batteries.
 It has overall poor battery life cycle.
 Hence these are not feasible to charge
EV’s.
 Nearly it takes 3-4 hours to fully charge
and gives 80-100 miles per charge.
Novel battery charging:
 Novel battery could charge EV within 15 minutes and these are more efficient than
the current lithium ion batteries.
 This technology combines the quick charging capability of supercapacitors with the
high energy density of conventional batteries.
 It uses the concept of electrostatic charge storage and rapid kinetic faraday
reaction.
 It has longer battery life cycle
 It gives 500 miles per charge.
Advantages of Electric Vehicles:
 Gas is a scarce, natural resource.

 Electricity is cheaper than gas. Electricity can come from

renewable resources such as solar and wind power.

 Electric cars pollute less than gas-powered cars.

 Electric cars are much more reliable and require less maintenance
than gas-powered cars. You don't even need to get your oil
changed every 3,000 miles!
Disadvantages of Electric vehicle:
 Not suitable for cities Facing shortage of power
 Improper disposal of battery leads to environmental
pollution
 Electricity is not free
Conclusion
The main focus worldwide should be increasing the use of
renewable energy and preparing the grid so that when the
times comes for EV’s we are well prepared.Evs can achieve
considerable GHG emissions reductions
