Problem statement
Students can’t rely on the IITD buses for transportation.

Breakdown into smaller problems-

•Buses don’t arrive on time as per the schedule.
•The Bus has maximum capacity of 60 but that is not enough at the peak
hours.
•The rikshawallas stand at only some points so all students can not access
them easily.
❏ OUR PROPOSED PROJECT

❏ Set up system so that students can get to know the live location of
bus.
❏ Also the timings at which the bus should come need to be altered
so that maximum students can be catered. Like the demand is at
peak at 8 am and 9 am.
❏ Rikshawallas to be inculcated into the system. This can be done by
tracking their position as well, or finding any other better
solution.
Innovation and novelty in idea

We are planning to use LPS rather than GPS to facilitate more

accurate and fast tracking of buses.

We are trying to inculcate rickshawallas into the system and enable

their tracking.

We are trying to indicate approximate space available in the bus at

any particular time.
Groundwork done
A project was undertaken in IIT Delhi to install GPS device but the project
had to be scrapped because there was a delay of 1 to 2 minutes which is
quite large on campus like IIT where the time of travel is only 4-5 minutes .

There was a project to distribute phones to rikshawallas and track their live
location but was cancelled due to high data rates then among other
problems.

We conducted a small survey among our batchmates and found that many
students miss the buses just by a couple of minutes. Also they all found the
buses to be very unreliable, most of them agreeing on all the problems
stated.
● This is the time table at Shivalik bus
stop. But it is totally outdated.
● As we did some field work on the
timings, one day the bus arrived at
8:45 am and on the next day at 8:53
am.
● No bus came between 7:53 am and
8:50 am.

Thus we see that the time-table put

up is completely unreliable.
DELIVERABLES AT THE END OF
PROJECT
❏ A system to determine the location of the bus efficiently and also
students will be able to get to know whether there is space in the
bus or not.
❏ Determining the best schedule of buses taking into account all the
constraints so that maximum students get the benefit of the
service.
❏ Inculcation of the rikshawallas into the system in the form as
already mentioned.
❏ We also desire to develop an app to use the above system in the
desired time. However, due to our limited technical knowledge
currently, we may not be able to complete the app development in
the stipulated time but we will surely continue this in the coming
year to implement our project and bring it to the ground level.
