AIM :
•The Institute of Archaeology provides archaeological opportunities to all and plays a major role in furthering the understanding of archaeological and
historical past of the Indian subcontinent.
• Its aim is to remain in the forefront of international research in archaeological sciences, besides promoting best practice in the management of cultural
heritage and in the care and preservation of archaeological artifacts.
OBJECTIVE
•It interacts with State Departments, Museums, Universities and other Archaeological / Cultural Institutions in furthering the cause of social, political and
economic context of archaeology.
• It offers interaction in Archaeology and Applied Sciences and provides leadership in curriculum planning.
SCOPE
•It develops training programmes both for in-service professionals and pre-service connoisseurs. It is also the nodal agency for the implementation of HRD
policy of ASI.

INTRODUCTION
Osmania University is a public state
university located in Hyderabad, India,
founded in 1918 with the help of chief

seventh and last Nizam of Hyderabad, Nawab
Mir Osman Ali Khan. It is the third oldest
university in southern India, and the first to be
established in the erstwhile princely State of
Hyderabad is the first Indian university to
have Urdu as a medium of instruction.

departments. Osmania Medical College was In 1846, the Nizam Medical school was formed to teach Allopathic Medical science in the

Establishment
A plan to establish a university in Hyderabad state was initiated in 1884. Wilfred Sewen
Blunt, a British educationist, prepared a proposal and presented it to the Nizam of
Hyderabad on 24 January 1884.The official decree was issued on 17 August 1917 for the
establishment of Osmania University. Inaugurated in 1918, the university has functioned
since 28 August 1919, with an initial enrollment of 225 students. Within the first decade of
its establishment, medicine and engineering faculties were started in 1927 and 1929, which
were accredited throughout the Indian subcontinent. The university college for women was
initiated in 1926, and in 1936 the arts college was started.
The university was established to cater to modern, secular, cultural, Islamic and regional arts
education, for which the medium of instruction was selected as Urdu and English as a
compulsory language, making it the first university in the Indian subcontinent to provide
education in native and Urdu language. The Translation Bureau and Publication section was
formed, which collected foreign and regional language textbooks along with literature,
sciences and other artworks from the world and translated them into the Urdu
language. Moreover, in 1974, the Progressive Women's Organization was formed in the
University which championed women's rights across India especially in the urban sector.
