A CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE TO PROMOTE TRAINING,

FOR EARTH BUILDING TECHNOLOGY

KHUSHBU PATEL
EN. NO: 201403101710015

BATCH: 2014-15

Raman Bhakta School Of Architecture.

INTRODUCTION

• building a house means different things to different people.

• materials are the physical substance of buildings and building
infrastructure.
• the fundamental characteristic and nature of architecture is the
materiality of the created object. hence, buildings form the
tangible world inhabited by humans and materials give the means
by which people experience physical space.
• Mud is, of course, among the oldest building materials around and
houses made from it last hundreds of years
• hence, to studying the earth architecture and the relation
between materials and architecture (because of reasons such as
the need to respond to climate change, thinking about the energy
that goes into sourcing, processing and transporting of materials.)
on which our construction methods were established since the
dawn of history.
• technology continue to be used. until this days.
• although they are restricted to very poor areas.

• Until the advent of Industrial revolution, buildings were constructed

using the materials grown or extracted from the nature i.e. ‘Natural
building materials’.
• Construction with materials such as Earth, Adobe, Bamboo, etc.
have proven to be ecologically sound and culturally sensitive.
• In the current situation, using natural building materials is one of
the sustainable ways to reduce the impact of the built environment
on the nature with respect to aspects such as economic issues,
non-renewable resource consumption, waste generation, energy
consumption, carbon dioxide emissions and indoor air quality.
• This alternative building construction method is not prevalent in the
country because of reasons such as:

• lack of skilled craftsmen,

• lack of education towards such materials and technologies
and
• A mind-set that such building materials are associated with
low income status or temporary architecture.

Raman Bhakta School Of Architecture.

• People who cannot afford so called
modern materials are still constructing
their houses with earth, but find it hard
to get skilled artisans. Buildings
constructed without knowledge, skill and
rigor in such a situation turn out to be
very poor in quality and thus causing further loss of faith in earth
construction.

• hence there is a need for an architectural intervention to promote and

sustain natural building materials in the society.
• Knowledge and access to knowledge are not spread evenly through a
community or between communities: people have differing objectives,
interests, perceptions, beliefs and access to information and
resources. Knowledge is generated and transmitted through their
interactions within specific social and agro-ecological contexts. So a
research and learning center where people could assemble together.
• is ideal to spread the knowledge of appropriate technology and
encourage the craftsmen.

AIM
show potentials and possibilities in earth construction so that present man
desires it just like other contemporary architectural style and materials.

OBJECTIVE
• To understand ideology of earth materials.
• To study the various earth construction techniques.
• To analyse the contemporary earth architecture in respect to it
construction.
• To review the possible innovative earth construction methods and study
the minor detail that can help improve its use.
• To review the appropriateness of the earth as building material in present
scenario.
• stating problems with the techniques as why they make earth
architecture undesirable for present client.

METHODOLOGY

1. LITERARTURE REVIEW

historical aspects: study of evolution of earth architecture.

contemporary stands: the present conditions of mud buildings and
contemporary stands about the people on earth
architecture.
book: earth architecture(from ancient to modern)
by William n. Morgan (university of Florida. press)

2. CASE STUDY
live case study:
auroville earth institute: To study the various earth construction
techniques.
Laurie baker center: to understand how such training centers works.
khamir: To review the appropriateness of the earth as building material
in present scenario.
hunnarshala foundation: program formulation

CONCLUSION
• to propose an institute which showcase earth construction techniques and Design
approach also fulfill the intension of making this technology more viable by providing
learning opportunity for interested people.
• This will be beneficiary point to larger scale.
