Biography

 American architect and designer, born in


Indianapolis Indiana and educated at the
university of Cincinnati and Harvard
university.
 His innate gift for drawing and painting,
become one of the corner stone of graves
architectural talent.
 After working as a fellow at the American
academy in Rome for two years.he started
his own practice in Princeton university
in1972.
 Graves had become less concerned with
the roofs of modernism and had developed
a wide ranging eclecticisms in which he
also started historical forms and
emphasized the use of color.
 Michael graves generates an ironic,vision
of classicism in working his building have
become classified in their mass and order.
 Although influenced by the fundamentalist
in developing an architectural language,
graves has become an opponent of modern
works.

Famous buildings
 PORTLAND BUILDING
 Portland building addresses the public nature of
both the urban content and integral program.
 Portland building is a block mass with decorated
faced .
 In order to reinforce the building associative
qualitative,the facade are organized into a
classical three part division of base middle or
body and head .
 A stylized gar land of blue ribbons( rendered in
concrete)decorated one side while a huge statue
of a woman, Portland , added in 1985 dominates
the main entrance.
 On the varied faced of this chunky is story
municipal office building . Speck red with
smallish square windows,mass of deep
color brawns blue and a trusty red
emphatic statements against a sandy back
ground.
HUMANA BUILDING
 This 26 story post-modern skyscraper is one of
Graves' best known projects; in addition to
receiving national AIA awards, TIME Magazine
listed it as one of the 10 best buildings of the
decade. The Humana Building is the
headquarters for the health care corporation of
the same name
 Like many post modern skyscrapers, it uses the
classically-based tripartite division with a strong
sense of a base--the 8 story loggia extending in
front of the office structure, a shaft, and a top,
here a kind of ziggurat when seen from the side.
 A huge circular bay projects at the top which is
surmounted by the ziggurat--or notched gable--
topped by a curved roof. The eight-story loggia
in front is capped at the center by a pyramidal
skylight (visible in the center image below).
 This post-modern style contrasts strikingly with
the cigar-box-on-end repetitive designs of
modern glass and steel architecture. Materials are
expensive--pink granite for most of the surface,
with several other polished granites. The building
is decorated in gold leaf.
