THE WORD "LEADERSHIP" CAN BRING TO MIND A VARIETY OF IMAGES
 WHAT IS LEADERSHIP?

Leadership is the art of influencing others to

their maximum performance to accomplish
any task, objective or project.
(Cohen, 1990)

Leadership is a process of influence between

a leader and those who are followers.
(Hollander, 1978)
•The ability of young people to empower
in order to inspire and mobilize themselves
and others towards a common purpose.
(Kahn, 2009)
 IMPORTANCE OF YOUTH
LEADERSHIP
o Makes young people better
members of their own
community and enhances their
civic participation.
(O’Brien & Kohlmeier, 2003)
o THEY HAVE A GREATER UNDERSTANDING OF THE PROBLEMS FACING
OTHER YOUTH, AND FRESH PERSPECTIVES ON HOW TO ADDRESS
THESE PROBLEMS.

 LEADERSHIP SKILLS, SUCH AS GOAL-SETTING, PROBLEM-SOLVING AND
SOUND DECISION-MAKING, ARE NOT JUST NECESSARY FOR LEADERS - THESE
SKILLS ARE NEEDED FOR SUCCESS IN TODAY'S WORLD.

 • Young people help to re-energize adults and
counteract negative stereotypes of youth when they
are successfully engaged in leadership within their
communities
(Zeldin, & Camino, 1999; Fiscus, 2003).

WHICH TYPE OF A LEADER ARE YOU?

AUTOCRATIC LEADERSHIP

• Aggressive leadership style

• Autocrat gives orders and expects prompt execution,
with little-to-no feedback or input from followers
• It rarely allows for an environment in which creativity
will flourish
DEMOCRATIC LEADERSHIP

• More participative in nature
