REM KOOLHAAS

 Born in Rotterdam,
Netherland 17 November
1944.

 he is a Dutch architect,
architectural theorist, urbanist
and Professor in Practice of
Architecture and Urban Design
at the Graduate School of
Design at Harvard University.
Biography
 Koolhaas studied at the Architectural
Association School of Architecture in
London and at Cornell University in
Ithaca, New York.

 After graduating from the Architecture


Association School in London, he
accepted a research fellowship in the
United States. During his visit, he wrote
Delirious New York, which he described
as a "retroactive manifesto for
Manhattan" and which critics hailed as
a classic text on modern architecture
and society.
- In 1975, Koolhaas founded the
Office for Metropolitan
Architecture (OMA) in London with
Madelon Vriesendorm , Elia and
Zoe Zenghelis.

- In 1994 he published S,M,L,XL in


collaboration with the Canadian
graphic designer Bruce Mau.
Described as a novel about
architecture.

Selected projects

1. De Rotterdam
designed in 1998
Site: Former harbor waterfront
between KPN tower and Café
Rotterdam at Kop van Zuid
 The project is situated on the Wilhelmina pier, near the
Hotel New York, the Luxor theater and the cruise terminal.
 De Rotterdam will be a mixture of uses, such as offices,
public amenities hotel, retail, catering, fitness, apartments
and parking.
2. New Headquarters for Central Chinese
Television Giant CCTV in Beijing.
Designed in 2002
the building is 230
meter tall
The irregular grid on the
building’s facades is an
expression of the forces
traveling throughout its
structure.
 it is not a traditional
tower, but a
continuous loop of
horizontal and
vertical sections that
establish an urban
site rather than point
to the sky.
3. Seattle's public library

Designed in 2003
The building has 11 story.

The library has a unique,
striking appearance,
consisting of several
discrete "floating
platforms" seemingly
wrapped in a large steel
net around glass skin.

but was only finished in
the first half of 2005 and
immediately became an
icon in the city.
