Introduction
 Additive Manufacturing is defined as the process of joining materials to make
objects from 3D model data, usually layer upon layer, as opposed to
subtractive manufacturing methodologies.
What is Fused Deposition Modeling?
Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) is an Additive Manufacturing
(AM) technology that builds parts by heating and extruding filaments
through a small nozzle. FDM usually deals with thermoplastics or
composite materials.

Day to Day Applications
Advantages and Disadvantages
FDM Advantages FDM Disadvantages

1.Surface of the filament should not be contaminated with

1. A good variety of materials are available
foreign particles

2. The extrusion head must continue moving, or else

2. Easy to change material
material bumps up

3. Low maintenance costs 3. Supports may be required

4. Thin parts produced fast 4.Without special treatment the surface feels really coarse
5. Low temperature operation 5. More area in slices requires longer build times
6. No supervision required 6. Proper ventilation is required

7. Temperature fluctuations during production could lead

7. No toxic materials
to delamination
Conclusion

“It is the ability to design something in the morning and have

a physical representation of the concept in your hand in the
afternoon that is priceless step forward in industrial design”
