DEFINITION/IMPORTANCE
 House preparation an important
producer management function
in poultry production which aims
at sanitizing the poultry house
before introduction of new flock
so as to control diseases.
 This preparation helps to
improve the performance of the
flock
OBJECTIVE OF HOUSE PREPARATION
To provide a clean,
comfortable environment for
the chickens and eliminate
any pathogenic organism
from the previous flock and
or outside contamination
CLEAN OUT AND DISINFECTION PROCEDURES
These include the following:-
 Remove any dead or live birds
remaining following liquidation of
the flock
 Remove all remaining feed and
supplies from the building
 Remove the equipment
 Remove litter and manure from the
building

 Once litter has been removed the
next priority should be removal of
numerous spider web that bloom
here and there on walls,

present, an insecticide can be
applied prior to cleaning the
building

 Wash the building and equipment
with high pressure washing
 Let the building stand idle for one
to two weeks
 Distribute rodenticides
throughout the building. Without
access to feed rodents will be
easy to poison.

birds
 Clean and disinfect the inside of waterlines
 Carry out repairs and maintenance of the
building and equipment e.g. gas pipes,
brooders, electrical equipment, windows,
doors, walls and floor.

programme must be most carefully
planned.

 The disinfection of a building
implies the elimination from the
house all microorganism that are
capable of causing disease.
 Follow the manufacturer’s
instruction carefully and make
sure that the disinfection has
proven active against the
pathogens.
PROVISION OF BEDDING MATERIAL
 Put the beddings (rice husk or
wood-shavings) in the selected
area.
 There should be ample supply of
relevant material.
 beddings should be economical,
comfortable and absorbent
FUMIGATION
 This is the very important procedure to
give a final boost to the disinfection
programme, at this stage the house is
setup ready for the next flock. The shed
should be properly sealed before
fumigation.
 Each house should remain empty at least
two weeks after it is disinfected and then
fumigate. The effectiveness of sanitizing
a house is depended upon the extend of
the cleaning before the germicide is
applied.
CONCLUSION
 Prevention is most and best
economical method of disease
control
 Establishing a good brooding
environment before chicks
arrive is more likely to ensure a
successful flock.
