Two meanings ascribed to poultry
litter:
• Admixture of beddings,
feathers, excreta and feed.
• Fresh bedding materials –
shavings or saw dust
WHY BOTHER ABOUT LITTER?
•To keep the birds
comfortable
•To keep the birds dry and
clean
WHAT IS CONSIDERED AS A GOOD
LITTER
• Coarse texture (to prevent
pecking)
• Highly absorbent
• Dry rate
• Free from moulds\toxins
WHAT IS CONSIDERED AS A GOOD
LITTER
• Easily and readily available
• Minimum dust
• Cheap
• Post bedding use
WHY GOOD QUALITY LITTER
• Birds performance

SOME DELETERIOUS EFFECTS OF
BAD LITTER
• Predisposes to diseases particularly
coccidiosis
• Build up ammonium level (> 30ppm)
• Impedes mobility- birds unable to
access feed/water
• Toxins/moulds being ingested
