m In an era of customized clothing where fashion cycles have become so fast

that they have exceeded the threshold of relevancy causing lead times to
become shorter, there is a need for clothing that is custom-made but which
takes less time to make. But it has not been possible due to the cost and
time it takes to manually measure, create patterns for that individual and
stitch garments.

m Nowadays worldwide companies are experimenting with new technologies

like the 3D body scanning systems, 3D Modelling so that they can offer the
customers a variety of design and fit options so that the clothing can be
called ´just for youµ.

m Fittingthe complex shape of a human body is a difficult task, even with

body scanners and computer technology. The interactions between body
shapes, pattern shapes, and fabric properties can create an exponential
number of possible fitting issues to be resolved. The development and
testing of these processes is still in its infancy, yet it is already possible to
create a system that can provide well-designed custom-fitted garments
using 3D modelling & CAD.

m Now a days, there are upto 20 seasons per year.
m For design concept to placement in the market, time
available is less (around 22-30 days).
m Using 3 D Modeling, product can be designed faster and
placed in the market.
m There is no need to design & manufacture the product
for approval.

m
m BODY SCANNING and other new technologies have the
potential to change the way that clothing is made and
purchased.

m Many industries are customizing the products they make. Now

the apparel industry is making custom clothing using body
scanners and other emerging technologies.

m The vignettes on the following pages allow us to compare the

traditional model of mass production (today) with a future
scenario for custom production (tomorrow).

m
m Complete systems for the digitization of the human body exist since more
than twenty years.

m One of the main users of this technology was the movie industry.

m The first 3D whole body scanning system, the 0

0 was developed by the University
of Loughborough (UK) in 1989 with the aim of conducting anthropometric
surveys.

m Only lately, in the mid nineties, whole body scanning systems began to be
used also for uniform fit.

m This marked the start of 3D body scanning for clothing industry, which was
then finalized with the commercialization in 1998 by [TC]2 (USA) of the
first 3D whole body scanner developed especially for the fashion industry.

m OptiTex 3D Œunway is a fabric simulation software
system that allows for instant visualization of pattern
modification using 3D on-screen models with
adjustable body measurements. The system enables
several simulated posture positions and continuity of
movement with the garments while enabling the
customer to evaluate and comment on the final
product immediately, before any production material
is used. Moreover, OptiTex 3D Œunway provides the
perfect tool to fully present animated current or
future collections in a rich 3D environment with
diverse backgrounds and the possibility of preparing a
full Fashion Show with more than one avatar on
screen.
